Just got mine!! The pads I got at American Sportbike are still good. Can't find my torque wrench.

Maybe I need to check mine. My XT was a "demo" with 28 miles when I bought it. I have never had the brake pulsing issue. think maybe a 6mm was put on it?

No, you have the 5mm rotor. I got countless tens of thousands of miles combined on multiple bikes without pulsing issues.

Not always, just sometimes. ; )

Since the 6mm rotor seems to be totally problem free, and since Erik Buell Racing seems to have made the 6mm one available for sale so quickly after starting up, it makes me wonder if Buell wanted to update the rotors on the production Ulys a couple of years ago but were held back for some reason by HD...

But that wouldn't have happened, would it?

It isn't the rotor that makes things problem free, its the fact its a NEW rotor that is doing it. On my XB with ZTL2 caliper, Lyndal pads, and Wave rotor, I was able to make it pulse after doing multiple stoppies. A new rotor treats the symptom, rather than cures it.

still.... I had pulsing, then rotor replaced under warranty, new EBC pads, religiously used my rear brake at stops, cleaned the rotor up, still ended up pulsing. I probably would have tried just the mounting kit but didnt want to take a chance.

I wonder if everyone that had a problem with their rotor pulsing ever dumped their bike at one time or another. Either way... from reports here, it seems to be a more permanent cure. Mine will be on this afternoon.

Are the 6mm disks made of something different?
My uly pulses pretty badly on occasion. I have to scotchbrite my rotor every few thousand miles. It's a drag.
is it a metalugy issue? my X1 doesn't do that sort of thing and never has.

I thought that the 6MM mounting is a more rigid mount as compared to the 5mm floating mount?

I had 1 rotor replaced under warranty and now I'm looking at the second being replaced next spring. I'm going to try new Erik Buell Racing mounting hardware then pads then 6MM rotor in that order till the pulse goes away.

It isn't the rotor that makes things problem free, its the fact its a NEW rotor that is doing it.

So Froggy, are you saying that you think the design is defective?

Or is the thicker rotor less likely to pulse, either because it's a bit thicker, or because it has a different (more rigid) mounting.

Has anyone experienced any pulsing with the new 6mm rotor?

The speed at which Erik Buell Racing came out with the thicker rotor leads me to believe that the problems with the 5mm rotor were something that Buell knew was a problem, but for whatever reason didn't address on production bikes. Then Erik Buell Racing came around, and knew that the new rotor was needed.

Nope. I hate to point fingers (and I know I will be flamed), but it is operator error.

The thicker rotor came out at least a year before the closing, it was available at your local Buell Racing dealer. The thicker rotor was designed to take more abuse as seen on a race track. Shortly after, Buell came out with a totally different 5MM rotor that was designed to improve the cooling of the braking system. This rotor is also available from Erik Buell Racing.

The pulsing is caused by brake dust building up in the mounting hardware, and deposits left on the surface of the rotor. The Erik Buell Racing mounting kit fixes the first problem, correct braking technique for the ZTL fixes the second one.

I'll second my own operator error.

My second rotor has lasted 3X's longer than the first one did. The Uly is my first real "performance" bike with engineering way beyond my skill set. With MTF classes and allot of saddle time I've learned better riding/breaking habits.

I think this whole "operator error" thing is BS.

I've been riding bikes with front disks for about 20 years, and I've never had the pulsing that I do on my Uly. Have I been braking wrong all along, but the more forgiving standard type disks didn't have any issues?

Based on the number of pulsing issues I've read about on this forum, I think that if most of the people use the brakes a certain way and they pulse, it's a design issue.

I'm open to being corrected though...

I knew you would say it is BS. Cool, you have been riding for 20 years, how many of those years have been on ZTL equipped bikes?

The ZTL system works differently than conventional brakes. Use it like a conventional brake, you have issues. Same can be said about the motor. Treat it like a traditional high revving sportbike engine, you are gonna have issues. This bike is different than any other bike on the market, in more ways than not.

I have put about 80k miles on ZTL equipped bikes in the last few years. I did have pulsing too at first, but changed my habits, cleaned the rotor, and pulsing never came back until that one time I did the at least 50 stoppies practicing in a parking lot. I cleaned that rotor off and problem never came back.

From my own observations over the years, 80% of the pulsing issues are on Uly's. Why? The average Uly owner is too gentle on the brakes, often dragging the front which causes excessive heat and wear without stopping the bike. Then they usually hold the front brake when stopped caking the pad material to the rotor.
(Which reminds me, 80% of the bearing, belt, and other issues are on the Uly more than anything else, also due to different treatment and riding environments vs the other crowds)

The few times I've seen this happen on the XBoard and 1125Rboard, its always been posted by people that ride it like that. Jdugger, an 1125R racer with multiple bikes, has over 40k miles on one bike, with many of them being track miles. He has never had an issue with either the stock or racing level braking systems on his bikes.

Your front brake is there for a reason, use the hell out of it. : )

I love the design and all but it's stupid to say the build up of deposits is operator error.
The front brakes should not require a new skill set!
I don't want to flame or be flamed but brakes are brakes and if they act up under normal use, there is a problem with the system, not the operator.

So what's different in this system that allows deposits to stick to the disk? I have never had any vehicle do that.

I have had rotors on my Honda Fit wear unevenly due to metal inconsistencies.
They gave me grief at the dealership over the waranty:
"how are you using the brakes?"
My answer:
"I use the pedal in the middle."

My smart-assed comment carries over to my beloved ZTL brakes.
We shouldn't HAVE to think about how to brake.

I'm convinced that it's a metallurgy issue.
The pad compound and the rotor love each other or something.

Froggy, I do use the hell out of my brakes! More so than on any other bike I've had. I thought you were going to tell me that I was using them too hard, to take it easy on them. Compared to my past bikes, I abuse the crap out of these brakes.

I do however, probably often hold the front brake when stopped, so that might be something.

But I'm definitely not overly gentle on them.

Last night I sent Erik Buell Racing an email about the 6mm rotors. This is what they replied, at 12:11am, if you can believe that:

The pulsing comes from deposits forming on the brake rotor. It is a
combination of temperature and the brake rotor to pad material interface.
The 6mm rotor will reduce it, as will the new mounting kit, as both improve
heat removal.

LOL, Natexlh1000, AND you make a good point.

I appreciate your helpful input, Froggy. I have the new front brake hardware but with no problems, and liking to keep my bikes clean, I'll stay with my stock bolts and washers for now. So what are you saying, grab a handful when needed and get off them as quickly as possible?

What are tips for the bearings and belt to help reduce the higher incidence of problems you say we Uly riders have? All input is appreciated.

Started my second year of ownership with a great 190 mile back road ride in glorious weather yesterday! Quite a bike!
