My 2009 Uly had just developed a major surging problem after it has been running for 1/2 to 1 hour or if I ride in stop & go local traffic. It started two days ago while riding in the Arkansas twisties and I was running it pretty hard, it got to the point of almost unridable. I had about 125 miles on that tank of fuel when it first started so I thought the fuel was getting away from the fuel pump pickup so I stopped & filled with fuel and I had a pop so it sat for 1/2 hour and cooled a little. Started it up and everything seemed to be ok for about 15 or 20 minutes then it started the surging again to the point that I could not pass a car as I would get out in the oncoming lane to pass and it would start the surging just like cranking the throttle full on & full off in 1 to 2 second intervals. Coming home from Arkansas it started this on and off surging after I had to ride slow for 7 miles due to a foot race being held in the other driving lane it started the surging and kept it up for the next 50 miles, what a pain in the rear. The air temp finally cooled down to 70 or so and then it startd to run ok again. That was a long 600 miles coming home today. What do you think could be the problem???? |

Did you get a check engine light, and was your fan running when it was hot? Could be circumstances were right for the fuel to boil also. Check your fuel vent hose for obstructions. The fuel pump may be crapping out, or possibly shorted wires, or plugged fuel filter/pick-up screen. |

Etennuly, There was no indicator light showing any problems, and yes the fan was running. The outside air temp was 80 to 88 and I was running a lot of WOT and a lot of right & left hand curves. |

Check in your air box, your Intake air temp sensor might be oil fouled! I had similar experiences with my 08 XT, and then rerouted the breathers to a catch can to fix the problem. Husky Husky |

While you are in there make sure that when putting it back together that the crank case vent hose ends are below that Intake air temp sensor. Keep them low to keep the oil from venting onto the sensor. The service manual warns about this but Buell had put mine together higher than the service manual recommends. I noticed it the first time I got into the air box a few years ago. |

When you take your air box lower off clean the engine to frame ground strap. |

Took it into the shop today and they did a series of checks, like ECM and checked for intake leak and that was all OK but they did load the latest ECM Program. I then rode it around to see if the problem was solved but after a 1/2 hour or so it started the surging, so they were able to see the problem first hand. They took it back in the shop and when I left they were preparing it to run it on the dyno with a fuel pressure gauge in line to check the fuel pressure while running under a load thinking that the fuel pump is getting warm and loosing pressure. I will know by tomorrow if the fuel pump is the problem or not but it is unridable the way it is now. |

P.S. By the way I did all of the things you guys suggested and they all checked out to be OK, then today I hauled it into the shop 85 miles away from where I live. |

Received word from the dealer this AM and they were able to duplicate the problem with the fuel pressure gauge in place. The fuel pressure would drop to zero then jump back up to 50 PSI in a 1 to 2 second cycle. I am really glad it kept running and did not leave me stranded. So new pump on order along with a call to tech service for any additional advice that may be needed. Mech also detected severe pinging when fuel pressure would drop, I was wearing ear buds/plugs and was listening to audio books so did not detect the pinging, just hope there was no engine damage done. When it ran it still ran good and no smoke or oil use, fingers crossed. |

Got the Uly back today and it was in fact the fuel pump. Everything else checked out OK so I am good to go again and now with the latest ECM update and TPS reset. Going for a ride, see ya. |
