My 09 uly is missing over 3000 rpm, seems to happen more when hot and is getting worse. Dealer blames me (of course) says plugs are likely fouled due to lack of warm up or the TPS because I did my own service. I pulled plugs last night and they are fine. The dealer also suggested that the throttle position sensor may need calibrating, said I could do this by driving 40 mph in 4th gear for 4 minutes which did not work.

I looked in the manual and it says to calibrate the TPS you turn the key on with engine off, go from 0% to 100% and repeat 3 times. When I get home tonight I will be putting new plugs in and trying the procedure in the manual.

My question is why would the TPS settings change? Isn't it just a pot on the throttle body?

Has anyone heard of the 40, 4th, 4 mile method or are they blowing smoke?

Ok we got multiple things going on here.

First, the TPS really dosen't matter on your bike, it auto sets and can be manually set doing the throttle method you mentioned. The older bikes required extra tools and software to do the reset, and can easily be done incorrectly.

The thing while riding sounds like he is talking about the AFV. The bike constantly adjusts the fuel mixture while you are cruising. It isn't one specific speed or gear that this happens in, as long as you are in between about 1500 and 4000 rpm and under light engine load. Sometimes if you change elevations too fast or some other environmental factors, the bike won't compensate fast enough and run a little off till it adjusts. Like stated by the dealer, you can adjust doing 40mph in 4th, but it is easiest in my case just to hop on the highway and cruise for a bit.

As for your issue with the missing, the bike will occasionally cough if it makes a large adjustment to the fuel mixture. That is normal. Without seeing your bike, it would be hard to say if thats the case here.
