Well, I finally got my wiring for the turn signal to brake light module working and all buttoned up today. Unfortunately I ran into another complicating factor.

I ordered some red led bulbs for the signals. After I got them I noticed the small bumps on the base were different than on the stock bulb, so the new bulbs wouldn't fit. The new bulbs, which are 1156s, have the bumps on opposite sides from each other. The ones on the stock bulbs are off set a bit. So the 1156s won't fit in the socket. I called the company and they told me I could just grind off one of the bumps, which I did. The bulb then fit fine and worked great. Until I tried to put the clear plastic cover back on the turn signal. It wouldn't go on because of the size of the led bulb. At that point I compared the led bulb to the stock bulb. The stock bulb is much smaller. I do not believe even a normal incandescent 1156 will allow the cover to fit back on.

I am assuming this is only a problem with the 2010 turn signals, as I have had communications with others who have put led bulbs in their turn signals and no one mentioned this issue.

So, does anyone have any idea what the 2010 turn signal bulb is and where I can get a set of red ones? Right now if I ride my bike I have to put the amber stock ones back in, which I am afraid will get me a ticket.

Thanks.

Oh...the bulb does have something stamped into the base, but I can't even come close to reading it. I have had excellent eyesight all my life, but I think I am at the stage where reading glasses would be helpful

Ok, I found a pair of my wife's reading glasses and read the bulb. It is an osram 5009. After some research I learned it has a BAU15S base. The bulb itself is physically smaller than an 1156 and I have not been able to locate a red incandescent or LED alternative. If anyone has one, please let me know.

OK this is weird, I just finished installing LED's in my son's Ninja twofity today. It has those stupid BAU15 sockets with the 150 deg. pin pattern and those real stubby bulbs. The Ninja sockets are a chromed plastic and yielded to the Dremel with a carbide bit, I just cut in a 180 deg. slot so the new BA15 LED bulbs would fit.

I had to do that with an '08 KLR650 I had also but those sockets were metal, but the carbide burr doesn't seem to care. The bulbs I used were superbrightleds.com 67-A15 amber you would want 67-R15 red. They are about 5-8% dimmer than stock but the instant-on flash makes them even more visible.

I made the LED bulbs fit in the socket. But they are too tall and wide for the lens to fit back on. I have emailed contacted an internet bulb company to see if they have any low profile bulbs that might fit. I can't find any red small bulbs at all. There may be some out there, but I haven't found them yet. If anyone knows if any, I'd really appreciate hearing about them.

Ron, I reread your post. Are you saying that the 67-R15 bulbs are low profile and should fit under the lens cover?

RED LED source as requested:
http://www.v-leds.com/Exterior-LED/Turn-Signal-LED /Red-LED/2-RED-MSMT-27-LED-TURN-p4748473-1-2.html

They come with pins at 180* so I just filed one off. Night pics are always useless, so I'll just say that they are at only about as bright as amber incandescent (amber is just more visible). Much better visibility from off-axis tho.

Thanks Nadz. Unfortunately they are out until 6/25. I will bookmark the site, though and check back if I don't find something else I am happy with. Looking at those bulbs I would not have thought they would fit under the lens, based on my experience with the LED bulbs I bought, but your picture clearly shows they do.

I ordered some of the ones Ron mentioned from a place called superbrightleds.com. They are the smaller ones. I already had some others on order from another place that I found after I ordered the ones I tried today. I liked them better than the ones I ordered first, but I don't think they are any smaller. Before I get done with this I may end up with an empty bank account and a stock of bulbs I can't use.
