Rwven-I don't want to be an alarmest but many folks report the first indication of belt failure is when the idle wheel can be rotated easily by hand. (sorry about hijacking thread, but thought this important).

The first indication is usually when the bike doesn't go anymore.

But, you are right, an easily rotated idler pulley is a possible indication of imminent failure.

Pso,

I've got one coming from Chicago HD. I'll pack my existing one as a spare. The belt looks good, though many do right up until they snap....

Going "toyota" seems to be logical. In the first place, it is unreliable and in the second, it's dangerous. The factory knows this as they updated the 2010 wheel. They wouldn't do that if this wheel problem did not exist. As it is, we customers only want a reasonable product that falls within the performance parameters of what is normally acceptable. The bearing situation is an engineering mistake. Most all of us check our bikes or have the dealer check it. This is not an acceptable performance parameter. The bearings on our bikes can lead to a very dangerous failure which can possibly cause injury or death.

What if it were a brand of tire or brakes that had this kind of failure history??? Do you think they could get away with sweeping it under the rug????

Its time for HD to issue a recall and install the new 2010 wheel or Uncle Sam needs to get in the game.

Just like Toyota, someone will probably have to die first. Any volunteers?

I already installed a 2010 wheel. I'm exempt!

I have had bearings fail on 3 different Buells, yet haven't been in any situation remotely related a crash. Needless to say, I am still alive. Sorry I couldn't help.

Arrr! Dead men tells no tales!!! Was she a bearing or the grog???

Lawyers paradise or a mob uprising, this bearing issue is not right and HD should voluntarily fix it before their quality issues come under the same spotlight that burned a hole in toyota's legendary quality.

As often as Froggy crashes, the bearings are the least of his worries!

I should sue due to the magnets they hide in the radiator pods that like to make contact with the road.
