In the name of science, I've decided to go to extraordinary lengths to get some of my more pricey accessories to "work". Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, and sometimes they go horribly awry(as in this case)...but either way there are always valuable lessons to be learned. Sometimes a picture is work a thousand words. I'll let the audience submit their own captions as no explanation is needed here.

They tape is finally off and my ear is a little red. More importantly, I've devised a plan that seems to work. So my new Shure earphones arrived today and I was excited to try them out. I put them in and put my Shoei X-11 on. *Poof* earphones ripped out, even worse so than the 5-yr old Shures I used to use. I tried 10 more times and no matter what I did, the helmet ripped them out. Then I tried my $150 HJC helmet that isn't nearly as cool. Result: It's much better and they stay in place. But I don't like to wear this helmet because it's not nearly as cool (and it doesn't match my Blue Uly).

So...I've read many posts about how people are putting on face masks first, to keep the phones in place. I don't have one, but from memory, I think it would have to be VERY tight to keep them from being ripped out because my X-11 folds my ears over everytime I put it on. So, until I can buy a face mask I decided to try a homemade remedy. I cut up an old t-shirt into a long strip. I put my phones in and then wrapped this strip over the top of my head and down across my ears and then tied it TIGHT under my chin. Tight enough so that the tops of my ears are pressed hard against my head (this is the real key).

Anyway, I put on the X-11 and they barely budged. Next, I untied the know under my chin and slowly tugged on the t-shirt strap. It slid right out! Now my phones are in place with almost no shift.

I've heard that using surgical tape is better than duct tape more suited to the task of keeping things in place on sensitive parts of the body, but I have no actual personal knowledge of that rumor, mind you.

However, I do have actual practical knowledge of installing helmet speakers which, by the way, do not require the possibility of semi-permanently bonding electrical devices to the anatomy.: )

Dude, this sound embarrassing. Let's get together tomorrow or next weekend and negotiate it.

I wear earplugs to reduce the wind noise, and it requires me to go easy as I put the helmet on...it makes you pull left and then right to avoid the earplugs. I met a dude at Battley HD who asked me why I was wearing earplugs. His Versys was cool (650cc), but he hadn't heard that HD had killed Buell.

Regardless, are you hitting the road Sunday?

The tape in that picture is usually not associated with the words "safe release". Ouch!

I guess the good news is that if you had any unwanted hair growing out of that ear it's probably gone.

I bought a pair of the Fuze earphones (as suggested by Teeps) and love them. Definitely the cheapest way to get a pair of earphones that stay in your ear under a helmet. Ok, not the cheapest, the tape is probably cheaper. I bought the red/blue ones and have been using them for a couple of months. An interesting side note is that I also have a bluetooth headset inside my helmet and was worried that I would not be able to hear the speaker through the molded Fuze earphones. Not the case. I can actually hear the bluetooth speaker better. The Fuze earphones (music off) cuts out road/wind noise, but let's voice sound through. I'm sure it's not by design and might be just the fact that other distracting noise is reduced.

As we all know - Riding requires preparation, skill and situational awareness. Be careful out there when using these devices.

Cardo Scala FM mounted on/in the helmet + Belkin FM transmitter + Blackberry curve streaming Pandora/Slacker = music on the road

The Scala FM can't receive A2DP (stereo Bluetooth) but it can receive FM signals, hence the FM transmitter.

Duct tape is cheaper though..

Why the hell did you not use super glue? That way you could have walked around for days with them in only having to say "I'm listing to something important".

This tape deal.....well if you had to tote that around town.....you would end up explaining yourself to everybody you came across, unlike voluntarily outing yourself to the world at large who can view it here!

Use wax swimming ear plugs to secure the buds. Not sure I'd do that with expensive buds, though.
