I got one after someone said it works, long story short, it didn't for me no matter what I tried. On my Uly the heated grips switch gets in the way, and on my CR the grips aren't fat enough even with the thing ratcheted down to max with the thicker grip.

I tried the "universal" one, as that was what I was told to use.

Froggy would have you use a Caterpillar O-Ring, which I tried, and it was a PITA to use. My baby finger just isn't strong enough to flick that o-ring over.

I use the universal Vista Cruise. It don't look no hell, but it works great. I've seen some where they put the bar on the top of the switch box, which then puts the thumb lever too high for my liking. I put my bar across the front of the switch housing, putting the thumb lever in a better spot for me. The bar is right above the heated grips switch, which blocks the graphic above the switch, but I don't need to see that anyway.

I don't know how the hell you got that thing to work. I really wanted it on my CR or Blast because my wrist still hurts from my wreck and makes holding the throttle for more than 3 minutes a chore. The blast would need the grips to be cut for the new bar ends, the CR I probably could put them on but they got damaged in the wreck and I haven't looked into fixing them yet.

Oh yea, I also was having a clearance issue with my GPS and master cylinder.

I just used a generic cruise control, and cut off the tabs so it's perfectly flat. Then I took a TINY machine screw, and cut all but about 3/16" of threads off of it, and screwed it through the cruise control into the switch box housing. The screw isn't long enough to go in the box and cause problems, it's just long enough for 2 threads to grip the box plastic. Worked both on the M2 and the XB. No ugly bar to worry about, and the grip end hides the screw.

I'm a big fan of the Crampbuster.

The problem with Crampbusters and the like is that it's pretty tough to scratch your right bum cheek with your left hand. There are just some things you need your right hand to do - a throttle lock allows you to do them.

I moved the master cylinder/mirror thing over a little bit, and used only 1 of the sizing rings that the Vista cruise comes with... I put the sizing ring to the right of the thumb lever, under the metal ring of the throttle lock. That way the thicker, fatter part of the grip takes up the extra space under the ring, to the left of the thumb lever.

Fits great, doesn't move around on the grip, works great, and looks like crap.

I had initially tried Mikef5000's method, and even spent $25 on a NEC lock like he has in the picture above, used my rotary tool to grind it down to fit, but then chickened out when it came time to put a screw into the switch housing. It was just too permanent for me, and I felt like I would probably screw something up. I think his looks much less bulky than mine though...

The universal vista cruise works fine. I have posted pics of my install. Nothing difficult or tricky about it.

If you have seen photos of Froggy's "cockpit" you'll understand why he had problems with the install...

I did an install with a Yamaha model VistaCruise similar to Mikef5000's setup with the NEF.


Installation was pretty simple:
  • Remove or pull back grips to expose throttle tube. If your throttle tube has a ridge on it near the switch housing that interferes with the VistaCruise, you may need to remove it.
  • Cut off the "U" shaped bit that sticks up from the body of the VistaCruise with a Dremel.
  • Drill a hole centered in the portion of the tab that used to have the flange attached to it. I drilled a hole slightly larger than the threads of the screw I planned to use to secure the VistaCruise to the switch housing
  • Test fit everything on the bike
  • Use the hole in the VistaCruise as a template to drill a small hole in the switch housing. Size this appropriately for your machine screw! Don't go too small or you risk splitting the housing.
  • Use the smallest diameter, shortest machine screw at Home Depot to connect the VistaCruise to the switch housing
  • Install the thin plastic "washer" between the grip and the VistaCruise to keep your grip from dragging on the VistaCruise
  • At this time, you might need to move your grip slightly outward on your bar to provide a bit more clearance
  • Adjust the tension on your VistaCruise


It works great and looks very clean. Originally, I was a little nervous about putting a hole in the switch housing, but the screw just keeps the VistaCruise from spinning so it never really carries much load. The switch housing is not watertight at all, so what's one more hole? Mine has been on almost 3 years now with no ill-effects.

I've had Kaoko and ThrottleMeister locks on several bikes before, but I prefer the quick on/off with a flick of the thumb that you get with a VistaCruise or NEF. I tried a CrampBuster once, but I have large hands and it just got in the way. It was too hard to put on or adjust while moving and it was difficult to not hit it accidentally in stop and go traffic. A couple other nice points - it doesn't install inside the bar-ends so you can easily use it with the "Polly" heaters and if you change to nice aluminum bars with a different wall thickness, it will still work.

Yet I couldn't get it to work on a bone stock bike with 400 miles on it either.

Here is how I mounted mine. Quick flick of the index finger and its on or off and mounted out of the way. Had to move the mirror mount to the left a little but otherwise went smooth. Love it and it also helped reduce the vibes I believe by supporting the throttle tube.
