So the second exhaust controller error 21'ed out last week on my '08 Uly since I've had it.

I took it in to Bumpus Murfreesboro to get checked out. Still under warranty, so no worries there.

They called today to say it was finished, but had a couple of odd questions to ask. It went something like this:

Bumpus: "Did you buy this bike used?"
Me: "No, I bought it new from you guys"
Bumpus: "Has it had an aftermarket exhaust on it?"
Me: "No. It's all stock"
Bumpus: "The reason I ask is because the cable that opens the valve in the exhaust has been removed"
Me: "Could it have been removed when it was rebuilt last year after my crash?"
Bumpus: "No, we wouldn't have removed it for that..... Wait.... Did we do a dealer trade for you?"
Me: "Yes. I think it was a dealer in Alabama"
Bumpus: "Ah. That explains it. They may have been messing around with an exhaust before trading it to us"

So. I think my Uly has a fully functioning exhaust for the first time since I've had it.

My question to you badwebbers is, will I be able to notice? And why has the inter-active exhaust controller waited this long between failures if it hasn't been controlling anything?

Oh, you'll notice the difference all right...

You'll only notice it if you really get on the throttle and take it to the rev limiter. If you ride sedately most of the time then it never even opens. The only way to truly know is to remove the fake tank cover and watch for it to work. I've done this and you really have to ride it hard for that thing to get the signal to open. Just riding to the grocery store at a normal within-the-law pace will not activate it. If you are a track guy then you'll notice it at the track.

Even through my earplugs, I can hear mine open, but I've never ridden without it, so I can't tell for sure if it makes that big a difference. If nothing else, it sounds really nice, and it will probably surprise you a bit the first time it opens.

Natron - thats an amusing story. The dealers are a hoot. No matter what make / model...it's the common bond that unites all motorcyclists.

Follow up question.

What position is the default for the valve if there is no cable?

The techs said it would run better without the cable, and I wanted to verify that.

It should be closed if the cable wasn't hooked up. Assuming it didn't corrode open or something. As for running better without it? Horseshit. Your bike would try and open the valve, it wouldn't open, and wouldn't give the optimal power it was designed for. You wouldn't notice it in 99% of your driving.
