One of the assembly line gals said that they were on their last day before a 2 week layoff. When they came back they would be making 2010 models. She made it sound like the 2 week layoff was just that, a 2 week unpaid layoff.

That may warrant some explanation as it may be misleading.

There is a 2 week shut down during the retooling for new models.

That has occurred every year . . . just like all the Buell folks getting the week from Christmas to New Years off with pay.

It's a rather good place to work and my bet is that with some of the overtime they have worked lately that few are complaining.

EDIT: I'm more concerned about Bobcat.

quote:

BISMARCK, N.D. - Bobcat Co. said Wednesday its plants in Bismarck and Gwinner will be idle for part of June and July due to the sluggish worldwide economy.

The maker of skid-steer loaders and light construction equipment said its Bismarck plant will be closed next Wednesday through Friday and again July 6 through July 10. At the Gwinner plant, production workers will be off the job from June 10 through June 12, from June 24 through June 26, and June 29.

The announcement comes a little more than a month after Bobcat said it would cut nearly 250 jobs at the two North Dakota plants. It has said it expects the construction market to improve next year.

The company did not comment Wednesday on the latest slowdown. Employees got the word in the morning.

"It's just due to sales being soft," said Tom Ricker, the president of the United Steelworkers Local 560 in Gwinner. Workers are starting to get frustrated he said, but the job outlook is not very good anywhere else, either.

A shutdown the week of July 6 has been planned for the last year to move equipment, he said.

"June, July and August are generally our slower months," he said.

Workers at the North Dakota plants returned to their jobs in February after an eight-week layoff. The plants also were shut down for part of March.

Ricker said workers would like to see trade agreements changed to give U.S. companies more of a chance to compete globally.

Bobcat is owned by Doosan Infracore International, a subsidiary of South Korea-based Doosan Infracore. The construction industry has been hit hard by the recent national and worldwide economic turmoil.

ARGH, with the first few posts I was alright with having missed HomeComing, but the more I read, just ARGH. Now that being said, the belt I blew up on Saturday would have happened somewhere very far from a good dealership. (Fortunately for me, Buell of Frederick remained open even with Ratbuell out of town.)

It makes me sad to have missed the event, but it makes me sadder to push the starter button on my Suzuki and not have to try to catch my gloves before the vibrate off the seat.

Oh well, there's always next year and at that point I'll be out of warranty and I won't feel bad about buying a spare belt.

I'm sorry I missed the Homecoming this year too (especially since it's my first year on a Buell). Next June, I'd sure like to try for Wisconsin, though. I'll have to build my endurance up, some, though. At 1800+ miles each way (according to my iPhone), that'll be some serious seat time for me.

I'd really like to convince my wife to hop on and go with me, but I've only gotten her as far as the pillion seat while the bike's parked in the driveway. Which is funny, since she used to sit behind me a lot on my other bikes. I never even came close to dropping any of those bikes once while she was on them. I'm not sure, but I don't think it's because the Uly is too tall. I don't remember it being any taller than my old Yamaha 400c thumper was. Well, I'll keep trying anyway.

Sorry I missed you folks this year...
