I just received & mounted a Laminar Lip on my X last night, but it's raining today so I currently have nothing to report except that it looks pretty trick, IMO, without looking like a riot shield or a diving board. However, Laminar sent it with 3M griplocks as the mounting material and a big explanation as to how it performs fine at the "legal speed limit". I guess they don't sell them in Germany. So off to Home Depot for $5 worth of SS hardware... Now it's MOUNTED, at the expense of four little holes drilled in my stock windscreen.

I'll update soon as I'm doing a road trip this weekend.

I've had one for about a year and love it. The griplocks hold fine at considerably above the legal speed limit. I'd be more worried about the stock windshield coming off the fairing.

I've had one on my '07 since shortly after buying ti and I have issues with the griplocks either. I did use the bolt retrofit used for the tall stock screen on my standard screen though.

The Lip works great for my 6' height.

Love my LL, also, but I did bolt it in place after the griplocks lost their, um, locking grip.

I had a laminar on my modified Buell tall for half a season. You need a butter knife to pry those little "velcro" pads off, I never worried about 'em! It really "levered" the top of the screen back though, to the point the middle of the windshield would rest on the top of the flyscreen. At 6'-0" I was never completely satisfied, and it was a PITO to keep clean. Installed the strada brackets and order to the universe was restored!

Start here: http://www.laminarlip.com/
ebay also has them from time to time.
Like mine, but it's a bit scary at 80+

You guys having concerns at higher speeds, are you using the little stick-on bumper between the stock shield and the flyscreen? That pretty much eliminates the leverage on the lower pins due to the extra height with the lip. I've never experienced any problem with Lip and stock shield combo even at speeds to 110.

When I first bought the Lip I stuck it directly to the flyscreen w/o the shield, worked great there, only had one problem when one of the DualLocks let go from the flyscreen. I now use three DualLocks on each side of the Lip mounted to my stock shield, no worries.

I agree with Xbimmer, I tried it without the little stick on bumper and it came all the way back. I turned around and went home to stick it on!!

I've had my LL a year now on my standard height screen using standard Buell pins 'n plugs for the screen and standard dual locks for the LL. I have cruised at up to an indicated 110mph with no ill effects whatsoever. My normal cruising speed on motorways is an indicated 80 - 90mph and I find it practically perfect for my 6'2" with 33" inseam physique.

I tried the Palmer Brackets before buying the LL, and although the Palmer brackets worked well, I couldn't live with the aesthetics.

Yea you definitely need the bumper, mine kept coming unstuck and used a bit of jb weld to hold it down.

I got mine used, no bumper. Anyone have pix? - it's not shown on the LL site.

I have the laminar lip on my 08 xt with the stock screen (which is taller than the x) I do not care for it , I am just under 6'2 and the air hits me square in the face and is disturbed enough to make the noise unbearable at 60mph plus. Would have like to try it on the shorter x screen but have ordered a madstad set up instead. I will say the stock laminar mounting is fine , it never budged at 90 plus mph... I think there is no way it would ever come off under normal use at any speed.

That's the arrangement I tried first, with the Buell Tall Shield. IMMHO, the Tall was terrible and the Lip made it worse.

Either mounting the Lip straight to the flyscreen, or to the stock UlyX shield as designed works for me.

Update: Just got back from the trip to NY. 220 miles out, 220 miles back, 200 miles around the Catskills while I was there. This thing is awesome! I hard-mounted it with assorted SS hardware and some nylon spacers to my stock low Uly windscreen. Unfortunately, I forgot to mount the bumper but the assembly faired well up to 95 mph (when you gotta pass, you gotta pass). Normally, with the stock low windscreen, when I get home from anything more than a half hour of highway speeds I've got a sore neck. Not so with this thing. And I would recommend hard mounting it as it not only gives you more confidence in its stability but it also gives you the option of adjusting the space between the screens with different spacers as it may (haven't tried it yet) alter the amount of buffeting. And it looks WAY better than some of those diving board/riot shields currently on the market.

it kind shows that everyone is different...i run just the fly screen minus the windshield on mine and its fine....in fact, i hate windshields period and ive done 1000 mile days in the rain.. i just cant deal with wind buffeting and many windshields do just that...

i had a harley FLHT, one of their most popular models, due to wind protection... after 4 different shields, i spend 2k bucks converting it to a roadking, just to get rid of the shield and the god awful wind buffeting...(i wear a full face helmet) bought 3 of those too, same story..

i just bought a bmw r1200r and its a great naked bike, the best running bike ive ever had...my bud who rides an RT, took it for a 5 mile ride and hated it.. he couldnt understand how i could ride it all day with no shield..

the point is, just cause it works for one, doesnt mean it will work for you..

Can someone tell me more about the rubber bumper. I don't have one and am wondering where you got yours. I don't remember getting one with the Lip and never had one with my stock shield.

Thanks

Glenn call the guys at Laminar:
http://www.laminarlip.com/about.php

I forget the owner's name but he's a pretty cool guy and can fix you up. The "official" bumper is a small clear stick-on 4-sided pyramid about 1/2" square. It's placed toward the top of the flyscreen so that the stock windscreen can bump against it under pressure from the Lip, if necessary.

Mine went missing one day recently so in a pinch I replaced it with a round rubber stick-on about 1/2" across, looks goofy white but works. Found them in the hardware store, used for feet for stuff I guess. I'd post a pic but the camera's not working...
