I just got back from a three day jaunt to the Beartooth pass.

Anyway on the way out, after bombing down I94 for 700 miles or so, all of a sudden the check engine light starts blinking and half power. The loss of power and blinking light would last for about 15 or 20 seconds, then run fine for @ 5 or 6 minutes. This went on for about 75 miles to the next exit.

I checked the oil and it was fine, proper level, no funny smell. All the oils were changed just before I left.

Outside air temps were in the low 80's.

I have flogged the bike this hard before and in warmer temps. So I guess my question would be is there something possibly wrong?

The bike ran great the next day in the mountains till we got to the freeway. Spark skipped only once, still maintaining 80+ mph, and warmer temps.

Today we took 2 lane roads all the way home and no problems.

3 days 2100 miles. Big fun

Possible faulty cylinder head temperature sensor or issues with its wiring and/or connections. Check integrity of applicable grounding.

I had essentially the same problem on one of my road trips. Take a close look at the ECM connector wiring. I had a couple that were through the insulation. I taped the over and eliminated the Skip Spark problem.

I had a similar skip spark experience on my Indianapolis MotoGP trip. It turned out to be simply fouled spark plugs for mine so don't overlook this simple fix.

Short term fix for fouled spark plugs to get you home --> Let the bike cool down if hot, then flog on it hard to clear out the carbon from the plugs. Once you get back from your long trip get the fouled plugs replaced as they will only foul again if ignored.

Buell's are famous for fouling spark plugs so replace them at 10K per service manual and let them warm up 1 to 2 mins before riding bike.
