At my 1000 mile service I had Syn 3 put in my Ulysses XT, and now I am barley registering an oil level at all on the dipstick when doing a hot oil check on a flat surface. Has anyone had anything similar to this? Any ideas why my burn rate is so high?
Thanks

Well, since you don't say how many miles you have on it now, we have no idea what the burn rate is.

If you run your oil level too high, it will use oil until it gets to the right level. (Hint- "full" on the dipstick is too high.) Your engine won't be fully broken in until at least 5000 miles or so, so some oil consumption is to be expected.

Provide more details and you'll get more answers.

Sorry, major omission on my part. I have 2400 miles so I consider the bike fairly new, which is why I am so concerned about the oil level. I do use it daily short commutes to work, and I saw in an archived post that this often leads to a higher oil consumption rate.

Mine seemed to go through a lot of oil until it reached about 6,000 miles. The last 3,000 cycle required no adds.

Don't fret too much. The Uly dipstick isn't measuring all your oil. From the bottom of the dipstick to top X is about 1/2 quart. So when you are in the "add" section, you're really only about 1/8th quart low.

Probably doesn't apply but when syn oil is new and clean it is very hard to see on the dipstick.

Electra - that's what I assumed, but the dipstick is bone dry when I look at it. I went to the Stealership for some more Syn3 - I will add small incremental amounts to try to get it to the two XX level that most people recommend, and then pay close attention at fill ups to see what happens.

About 7,200 on my '08 with Syn3...

What I notice... If I do a hot check ~5 min after a hard ride I get a very low reading (bottom of the dipstick) then if I start it again and let it idle for a couple minutes then shut it off and check the level again ~5 minutes later all is ok at (2) XX's. Seems like it wet sumps a little?

Consumes very little oil between changes.

My '08 Uly XT used quite a bit of oil in the first 1000 miles. Around 1 qt by my measurements. It seems to be using less as it gets more miles, I'm at about 4100 now. Mentioned it to my local dealership and they recommended I keep a log of oil usage in case it didn't improve on it's own. I've seen others say theirs used oil until 5-6k and then quit.

Wow - one quart? I will definitely keep a log and hopefully it will resolve itself with more miles, as seems to happen with many posters.

IMO, if a quart of oil is combusting in 1000 miles, you're going to see blue smoke and your plugs are going to be pretty crudded up. Yamaha taught me that. I thought my '06 was using oil early on but then I found it in the airbox. After adopting the two XX method taught here I've had no issues. My take on "Check when hot" is to let it settle for a few minutes after I get home. YMMV.

That's why the Motoman breakin is so important.

Or buying a former demo model. Which is pretty much the same thing.
