How many Uly's? (From the archives)
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/371385.html?1127771764

Trying to revive a dead (and archived) thread didn't seem to work, so I'll just start a new one. See previous thread above.

I'm interested to know if anyone has any further input or knowledge about the PRODUCTION NUMBER correlation with the SEQUENTIAL NUMBER in the Vin.

The only reason I care is because I just purchased #002 of the '06 Uly. Not for bragging rights..., just curious.

I guess my question is if there "is" a correlation or if the sequential number just "varies" like the manual says????

So feel free to add to the list. We will need the Manufacturing Date (month and year) and the last 5 digits of the VIN.

Why would the serial number be "random"?

It wouldn't be a "serial" number if it were.

It's not a "serial" number it is a "V.I.N." (vehicle identification number).

This is my take on the whole S/N VIN theory.

On a production line the S/N or VIN maybe in sequence but the day it roll out it may not. If a bike fails in testing or somewhere along the line they find issues in manufacturing the bike goes back in line. this may take a while to get things fixed. Only when it passes final inspection it gets a manufacture date.

This is why i think the vin is on the metal of the bike and the manufacture date is on a sticker.

Name another vehicle whose VIN isn't sequential.

I agree that they may not roll out the door exactly in order, but they will be within the same production month.

It would be much harder to generate random numbers than to simply run them in series.

It's also possible that the sequential numbers apply to all Buell vin's (all models); the model information being contained elsewhere in the vin.

My understanding is that all of Buell's VINs contain a sequential model production run number.

I believe it's the last 5 digits.

It would be much harder to generate random numbers than to simply run them in series.

I don't know if they run the VINs serially or not. One argument against doing so is that it makes it very easy for someone to just make up a VIN number.

By doing a little math on a serial set of numbers, it would be easy to generate VINs which were neither random nor serial. This would be handy when getting a VIN over the phone for example, as you could tell if the person screwed up a digit, or was lying about it.

An overly simplistic example, given a 5 digit VIN number, would be to run the first 4 digits sequentially, and make the last digit the remainder of the sum of the first 4 digits when divided by 9.

Usually, there is a VIN database supplied that the licensing folks use to verify VIN numbers at registration.

You could make up a fake VIN, but if they run that VIN against that database, it'll come up bogus.

You could just as easily create a bogus VIN with randomly generated VIN# as well. I don't see that it would help prevent it by using randomly generated VINs.

Math or not. : D

It's the difference between an invalid VIN and someone elses VIN. Again, I have no idea how VIN numbers are assigned in the real world.
