For the regulars on this board it may be becoming obvious my bike needs a little attention instead of just the daily floggings it receives here in the mountains...Anyway, as the title suggests, I'm starting to notice a metallic clunking sound at times when I first take off from a stand still, or if I shift at a lower RPM and then give it the gas. Any thoughts besides ceasing to thrash my bike? Thanks. Josh |

Without hearing it, its hard to say. Could be pinging, or it could be normal valve chatter. Can you describe the sound better? |

If I had to chose between the descriptors "ping" or "chatter" I'd go with chatter. Doesn't really strike me as pinging, and have never experienced it before. It only last for a second or two as it goes away once the RPMs go up and things smooth out. I'm not riding any different than what I have in the previous 6000 miles, so... |

A metallic clunk is something I associate with transmission, not that I'm a mechanical genius. Where does the sound seem to be coming from? Is it in all gears or only in first? Any other symptoms, like lurching or surging for example? |

Primary chain/tranny was a good call. I pulled out the old service manual and the chain was a bit loose, so we'll see what happens tomorrow when I ride. Thanks for the input so far. JB-as a matter of fact, I did notice it the one time I didn't have earplugs in. Don't know what I'd do without you guys...probably spend a lot of money at a Harley shop. |

Is your clutch cable spring broken and gingleling on the exhaust header |

Nope. Just replaced it with the new one. |
