Ok, I've read many threads about Uly fans; most seem to become RSS debates. Today, it's 70 degrees out and I noticed a conspicuous silence when I shut the bike off and took out the key. Fan seems to spin ok, the bearings don't seem bad. How do you actually test the thing to see if it works? Besides "ride down my favorite road real fast then quickly pull over and shut it off"...and no, I'm not interested in a RSS. I have a Special Ops pipe so I don't hear the fan while riding one way or the other.
Fuses look ok. Thanks for any helpful hints on confirming it's ok or dead!

I think a fan failure will normally result in a check engine light.

If you have ECMspy you can force it to run with a diagnostic test. Otherwise, I guess you'd have to disconnect the plug and provide power via a jumper.

well, then maybe the bike is getting broken in better and is running cooler. Other than the silence it's running great. Easy starting, not much stumble off idle, and just rips when you open it up.

You could let it idle in the drive till it comes on. or seems to skip.

If it goes into skip spark mode that will also result in an engine light IIRC.

Ahhh the the fan....I know it well right now. Neuro, The Service Manual provides a very good flow chart on page 4-80 for Trouble Code 36 detailing how to troubleshoot the fan.

The ultimate fan thread with Husky's detail's about the fan is a worthy read if you have not already seen it. I have an '06 and my fan just mysteriously quit working and have spent too much time troubleshooting it as I could not believe it was dead...but it is. Some folks say the fan has been redesigned and improved since the '06 version on the Uly.......Husky certainly provided some very detailed re-design requirements. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/225002.html#POST752262

My fan failed and I did not get a check engine light.

Thanks for all the responses, guys. Turns out to be kind of a fire drill; I rode the snot out of the bike on the way home yesterday ; ))))and the fan actually works fine. Odd that it used to go on when it was 20 degrees out after even a short ride, and now it seems it doesn't go on unless I flog the bike (and now it's in the 70's here). I have to think the bike is running better, and it seems to. Firstbatch, thanks for the link and manual info, that's just what I was looking for. I'll keep it for later reference, and order a service manual!

I think a cool mod would be to install two LED's in the dash area that came on when the fan came on. One for low and both for high. Any EE geeks want to show us how?

Here is a mystery......even though the Service Manual clearly shows a flow chart on 4-80 of how to test the fan off the bike by connecting a 12V source to the two leads I cannot get the fan to operate. Bought a brand new fan and the same result. Connected a 12V battery and the fan will not spin. Does not make any sense at all.
