Better known for Sturgis events, the Top 50 Rally Park is on track for a world-class trailhead:

(click for larger image)

Top 50 is in Piedmont, SD--halfway between Sturgis and Rapid City--has been host to some of the Rally's most exciting events for the last 2 years. (see http://www.top50rallypark.com) Now they "got dirty" and are working hard to establish a trailhead on the soon-to-be-established Black Hills National Forest trail system. The system will consist of more than 4,000 miles of trails and roads--many of them suitable for adventure sport riding.

The trailhead will support year-round events and recreational use and will help alleviate concerns over the existing access to the forest (see the "firetrail" on the map). By working with groups such as mine (Offroad Riders Association), Tread Lightly!, the South Dakota D.O.T., and the Blue Ribbon Coalition, the Top 50 Rally Park has designed a trailhead that will promote the best conditions for this necessary access to our public land.

The most prominent feature will be a tunnel that goes under the highway to keep traffic away from participants and recreationalists. If funded, the tunnel will be installed during the re-construction of the highway in the next year or so.

By signing the petition, you will help us get funding and support from local government, population, and sponsors. If you would like to be a part of the project, or would like to have an event at the park--contact me at troy"at"independentcycleinc.com

Thanks!

The last time I checked in about online petitions i found they were worthless. Do you guys have a paper petition started?

Yes, we have letters distributed throughout the local area--but since this is not just a local issue, we want to try to reach out to the rest of you.

Please, stay informed about the effort to keep you out of YOUR public lands! For the Black Hills, check out the BHNF travel management website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r2/blackhills/recreation/trav el_management/ohv.shtml

Thanks to everyone who has signed (and will sign) this petition--it's more ammunition we can use to secure grants, sponsorship, and get support from our local community and leaders.

Bertotti,
Do you have the impression that actual paper petitions are much more than worthless either?

I'm guessing that their main value is giving activists and excuse to talk to people about their issue.

UPDATE:

We got a shining endorsement from the Blue Ribbon Coalition:

"The development of this Trailhead near Piedmont is a perfect solution to issues of parking and access from the eastern slope of the Black Hills to that developing trail system. In fact, I cannot think of a better example of how to effectively bring collaborative solutions to the table that combine government agencies (city, county, state, and federal), enthusiasts, and local business. It epitomizes the cooperative spirit needed in these economically challenging times for recreational management."-- Greg Mumm, Blue Ribbon Coalition Executive Director

Please, if you haven't signed it yet, sign the petition today!

(thanks)
