I was just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem, and if they have a better fix than stock item.
I am on my third (4 lack of better description) spring/wire retainer that holds clutch cable away from exhaust on my 08 Uly, Lower end of wire cable holder keeps breaking off allowing cable to come in contact w/exhaust.
I shall fab my own fix this week just thought if anyone had something they were already using, I would appreciate some input.
Thanks All

Is this a new problem for the '08 or do the earlier models have the same issue?

This is an old problem, but not extremely common. The third one on an '08 seems very wrong. Seems like there is undue stress on it causing premature failures.

Doubt it, as cable is secured to front of engine beside front cross brace.
IMHO possible I am flex engine (rocking)
just enough to break at attachment point.

The "wire form" as Buell calls it, broke on my bike a couple weeks ago. Actually, the first part broke several months ago, so I flipped around and used the other half until weekend before last.

Karlsbad, this is a $10 part. And, if the dealer did not have to order it, I would have grudgingly bought the part. But, as usual they had to "special order" it.

Short story: I formed one up my self out of 3/32" piano wire. Not as pretty as the original and it only has one leg; but serves the purpose of keeping the cable out of the exhaust.

JM,
This part and a couple of other's are what caused my mini rant about dealer value, in the '08 Uly price thread...

I'm on my third and have a spare anyway. Even tried spreading out the load with a couple larger washers either side of the wire form, bottom half still breaks.

I've looped three zip ties around the cable at that point and no it's not pretty but at least it works better than the factory solution.

Teeps,
I am in complete agreement with you on the stuff said. My level of anger in that post was beyond conceivable.

Karlsbad,
At least for now it's under warranty and you'll get them for free for a few years. Tell them to stock up now. That gives you plenty of time to create a better solution for us all.

Here is my solution due to the fact that my dealership doesn't stock that stupid wireform even though I have a Uly so I did this...............

I have these from Harleys when they upgrade to all that chrome stuff and have found it to work out great so far. there seems to be no extra pull effort required and hold the cable a little farther from the header. the extra few degrees of bend do not seem to have upset the cable pull or performance. Just waiting for my replacement cable since I am still running with the burnt one when the form broke the last time.

Shame on Buell for sending units out with this problem.
No excuse for this what so ever, completely un acceptable
It is a easy fix and should have been addressed long ago.
This one is simple increase gauge, or use something else.
Not rocket science here

Ok guys, that little rubber coated stainless band is the front brake line clamp on any HD models with a wideglide frontend hopefully meaning that your respective dealer stocks them. The part number is 10053 it wasn't until I got home that I realized that I should have checked the price of them!

I'm buying a wire form for the second time now. The first time it broke right after my 1000 mile maint and I found the boot the covers the clutch adjustment pushed up. I think the maint guys left it pushed up. The second time it broke was on the 18th of Nov when I hit a speedbump (that i didn't see) right as I hit the front brake to slow down. The bike flipped right up and over like it was doing a summersault. Probably looked like one of those videos where you see people trying to do Endo front wheel stoppies or whatever they are called but without the speed. So the bike tumbled straight over and if it didn't land on me would have been pretty stratched up. As it is it cost me about $300 bucks to buy right/left/center fairing supports ($46 each), a flyscreen $56, and a windscreen $56 plus some screws and odds and ends. Also I noticed the wireform is broken again. Oh, and I broke one mirror at the thread.

LOL

Now i just need to find a service manual (pdf anyone?) to make sure I torque everything right.

Where's a camera when you need one?

I just broke my second clip too, the dealer replaced it under warranty (again).
