How about we start with what they have in common.
They both require gas and use oil for lubrication.

Thanks-Most folks I talk with that know of Buells, (they are M/C riders)keep saying it is a Hardley engine and I just wanted to be able to spit out the factoids that Growl and Electrglider just gave me.

Wow, you guys make it sound like there are no similarities between the two. It is still a pushrod 45 degree V-twin with a single crank pin, right. I've not had mine apart, but I'm guessing there are four cams like the XL engine, right?

No one mentioned the air induction being top draw instead of side draw. That probably accounts for more performance improvement than anything else.

Surely the cams are different.

For the engine management computer, it's different, but I don't know that it's better. Mine coughs when it's cold, and pings when it's hot, problems I never had with the HD version.

That new Rotax engine, now that's starting afresh, but the XB has a lot more in common with the XL than it has different.

Not saying anything bad about the improvements, mind you, I love mine!!

It only spins in a different direction if you're in Australia.

http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2007/08/03/erik- buell-interview/

Erik Buell:Well, ever since the 984 engine and the Blast engine, those were Buell engines, they’re not used in any Harleys and this Rotax is just a continuation of what we’ve been doing, it’s just a different engine supplier than Harley but they’ve always been our engines, at least since the Blast, the tube framed bikes used a tweaked Harley Davidson engine but the XBs have new cases, heads, cams, even spin a different direction so there’s a lot of things in the configuration that look like a traditional Harley engine because, for that customer, we thought that was important, but it really was a unique engine when it came out, it shared almost no parts with the Sportster, since that time they’ve brought more of those parts into the Sportster but there are still many, many differences so it is truly a unique Buell engine. So there will never be a time when we have a Buell where we drop someone else’s finished engine in it.

Just because it is a 45* V-Twin, it doesn't mean it's the same engine.

The engine doesn't spin in a different direction, the cams do. What a difference the location of a comma makes. But yes the engines are quite different although they do share some parts. Cases are different covers are different, as are crankshafts, pistons, oil pump, etc. etc. It is an engine produced by Harley-Davidson and as such is a Harley-Davidson engine, but it won't interchange with any engine in a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
