Fellow Buellers,

I'm a new Bueller, 2000 miles specifically. As of late, I've noticed the Buell acting a bit rough, and I'd like to talk with someone local that has the software and cable that you buy from Al at Am.Sportbikes and possibly get mine done before this weekend as I've got a trip planned. More than likely, I'll be ordering one soon but if any of you have one and you're in the Tigard/Portland area in Oregon and you wouldn't mind spending some time tomorrow, email me. That's that. I can't ride down to Portland before your weekend trip (I'm still waiting for my seat to arrive), but if your trip has you riding by the Seattle area I'd be more than happy to do the TPS reset for you.

Hey Packdog,

Wow, thank you for even considering to ride into PDX to give me a hand.

I'll be hitting Hwy 14 past the Bridge Of The Gods and staying at at near by town as I progress up to the high desert country so I won't be going up to Seattle. But man, just the fact that you've considered giving me a hand when you're three hours a way blows me away.

I'm talking with a friend about another alternative right now so I may end up with a solution soon; while not before this ride, I think I may end up with a solution shortly after.

I'd still like to buy you a beer sometime. For sure, I'll be heading up for the usual annual bike show at the stadium in Seattle.

Hi Nick,

That sounds like an excellent ride - have fun!

Something I just thought of - have you tried "recalibrating" the AFV? All you have to do is keep a stready throttle at 3500rpm for 5 minutes. It has something to do with the ECM learning some kind of "value" from the O2 sensor. Mine started running poorly during the break-in period - the throttle is supposed to be always changing during this period - so I cheated and tried this and it made a huge difference.

From one of Al Lighton's posts:

"AFV=Adaptive Fuel Value. The ECM compares the injector duration needed to keep the bike at 14.7:1 during steady state closed loop operation with the value obtained from the fuel map table for the same RPM/throttle position. That ratio is the AFV. The AFV is used to scale the open loop response. The nominal value is 100%, but it ranges from 80%-160%. "

Actually a steady throttle (cruising) for 2 miles between 25 & 35k in 5th gear resets the AFV because the ECM is in an "open loop" cycle. Works like a dream. This does not help a TPS that is out of calibration but it will help w/ the altitude changes you will see going from Portland to the high desert areas. Think of it as an automatic carb re-jet. Barometric pressure, temp, o2 changes are all monitored via the closed loop cycle in the ECM. This is done using all the sensors on you Uly. And some simple folk think Buell bikes are an old school, 1950 era, v-twin. Glad they do, that way I don’t see them on every corner like rice. Great purchase Nick, welcome to the dark-side.

Thanks for the explanation.

Back when I was breaking mine in and I learned about this AFV thing, the thread I read made it seem more like mysterious black magic than anything else. I just gave it a try and it worked - even though I had no idea what was really happening.

Ironically my bike was running fine just prior to the first maintenance and I didn't notice any change after the TPS reset. Really it just seems to run better the more I ride it. During the break-in period is the only time it ran a bit rough.
