I just tested an '07 at the dealer. I'll be back to sign soon. I'm waiting to see what Progressive is going to charge me to add this to my current policy and if it's not crazy I'm riding it.

No buyer's remorse here. Just make sure all recalls have been addressed,i.e. kick stand, bank angle sensor, and tall windshield.

Picky clarification: The Buell Ulysses first hit the showroom in 2005 but as a 2006 model. The build date's year is often one year prior to the assigned model year since new bikes usually commence hitting the showrooms months ahead of the actual corresponding calendar year. : )

Allreet,
Mine was a late 2005 model with 3000 miles when I bought it and it's been fine.
I've done approx. 4000 since then,it's a comfy bike.

Like the guy says, check the recalls have been done (I'm still waiting for the BAS to be done) and trawl the web for other peoples experiences but take a lot of what people say with a large pinch of salt.
You'll be able to decide what's worth taking notice of when you've read everything out there.
(This is prob. the best site to glean info from-try ADVrider also, the Beasts section is good(as is the rest of the site).)

I cut my airbox to match the 2007 model and noticed the difference,re-routed the breather pipes out of the airbox while I was doing it.While you have the cover off check that the cables and wires/pipes aren't chaffing through (this also happens under the saddle).
You can easily get the headlight to shed more light by swopping wires over to work both bulbs on main beam.
Some of the torx fasteners will be seized 'cos they build it all up dry (no blue thread protector stuff like the Japs do) so give stuff an overnight pentrating oil session and have some allen head spare screws on hand, then use copperslip on assembly.

Don't let all the small niggles and things that go wrong with Buells put you off buying one if you enjoy tinkering or can do some of the repairs yourself, the grin you'll get from riding it is DEFINATELY worth it,the torque and handling are addictive as is the way the front lifts out of corners and over bumps. The engine note with an aftermarket pipe is also addictive and the long distance comfort solo or two-up is the best I've experienced. You can potter about and sight-see all day, then open her up and get all hoolie until you scare yourself silly and go back to listening to the exhaust note with a cheesy grin.

Good luck, take a test ride and you'll be hooked!

Hoon.

Huh. I don't think I have taken a single bolt yet off my 2005 XB9SX that didn't have factory applied threadlocker on it. Even the bolts for replacement parts I get from the dealer come with threadlocker already applied.

The worst offending bolts on mine were the ones holding the air filter platform down at the back,I was just able to get them out with careful use of impact driver and a bit of knuckle skin-the threads had rust on them (a lot of it has to do with non-similar metal reaction, steel bolt in aluminium hole),oh yeah the other bastard one was when I tried to remove the upper front mudgaurd.
The single bolt which holds the 'gaurd' to the underside of the headlights was completely rusted up where water had gained entry to the inside of the headlights and 'pooled' around the threads of the bolt.I did get it undone in the end with use of swearing, junior hacksaw, knife and mole grips.
I had to cut away the plastic around the metal threaded insert and use the grips to stop the insert spinning whilst un-screwing the bolt.

The rear axle removal thread on this site talks about a lack of assembly paste being used.

Maybe it depends on how the guys on the assembly line at the factory were feeling on the day your Buell got built.

I suppose a lot of it could be down to the fact that the good old local councils over here put down enough road salt in the winter to preserve a large pod(Pod of Whales,School of Fish right?) of whales, and anyone daft/hardcore enough to ride all year long pays the price in furry aluminium parts and fasteners.

It's not just American/European/Jap bikes that aren't built to withstand the salty onslaught but Triumphs too and they're built over here so they should know better (I know 'cos I had one)-sorry rant over.

So Reepicheep, either you've been lucky or I've been been unlucky.

It would be interesting to hear how other people have got on removing their torx fasteners (Apologies if this has been commented on here already-I have read about people moaning about/praising the torx fastener in the past-personally I think they're better than the usual Jap monkey metal bolts/cross head bolts but once they've given me grief I replace them with Allen bolts.

There is no such animal as a 2005 Ulysses.

The bike carries a post September 2005 reg (55) over here in the UK.This means she was registered between Sept 20005 and March 2006. I'll check on the log book.
Thanks for the great replies.
