and i don't mean sad. do any of you guys have blue pipes? mine are blue for about the first 12" or so. may be related to another symptom that i noticed about two months ago while warming the bike up late one night at a friends house in the woods. very dark. it seems that after running for only about a minute the pipes were glowing bright orange. about the first 8" or so. as soon as i saw this i got under way and after a mile or so i pulled over to check and they were back to normal. service tech at the dealer said this is due to the lean warm up mode of fuel control. i dont know if i believe this or not. |

I think that may be true. I had a jardine on my Uly and noticed that my pipe had blued a lot more than it did with the stock pipe. Now I have the special Ops pipe on it much better. |

Most stock bikes run waayyy lean from the factory at certain times due to emissions. As much as I love EFI that is the biggest thing I miss about a carb. Now you have to spend hundreds to be able to control your fueling when with a carb usually 20 bucks for a jet kit and you were good to go. I think all modern EFI bikes should have owner adjustable injection from the factory. |

I think it's one of those "They all do that" things. Every XB I've ever seen has blue->gold on the first 8-12" of the headers. My BMW oilhead did the same thing. You can polish it off if you want, but it'll turn blue again in a few minutes. I don't bother because: a) I'm lazy b) I think it looks cool. |

If you get them dirty enough they will just be brown all over. BC Steve |

The Uly mapping is adjustable. Or so I am informed. Makes me wonder why people buy race ecms when you can map a stock one just the same. No adjustment to the mapping is going to get rid of the blueing on the pipe. Unlike most bikes the exhaust is only a single wall pipe and is stainless. It is normal to have it glow when the engine is running and there is not too much air flow over it. Some will be worse than others because the metal may be slightly different thicknesses. |

very dark. it seems that after running for only about a minute the pipes were glowing bright orange. They will glow if you let the bike idle. It has to be dark to see it, so most people don't notice. |

Kip's picture is ceramic coated headers. If you don't like the way the metal turns blue, or you don't like the heat, you can have Jet-Hot or HPC coat them for you. There are a variety of colors available, including one that looks like aluminum. I coated my muffler, but I didn't have the guts to remove the headers from the bike. The procedure for doing that is 3 pages in the service manual. |

As long as something else of yours isn't blue, you should be fine |

It's pretty easy to rotate the engine. I had my doubts at first but read through all the info on badweb and the service manual. And after your done you feel good about what you've done. |
