Hello all and thanks for this great place. So many wonderfully helpful people and information to learn from.

I purchased a 2006 demo bike from Utica H-D in NY about a month ago after a 7-year break from bikes. Had to sell the last one to pay for that higher learning adventure.

The Uly came with all 3 Buell bags and 620 miles, GM of dealership used it last summer. I saw a picture of a Uly on the web and bought mine the next week.

It’s been a little bit a learning experience for me after the long break and the new style of bike but each ride I love it more and more. Now if it would just warm up a little here all would be grand. Which brings me to the Questions I have.

I am in Lake Placid NY, it’s not really summer up here yet and it’s been below 32 almost ever night for the month that I have owned the bike. I had an issue starting the bike one of the first days I tried to take it to work. It went down to about 30 the night before and was around 40 when I tried to head to work.... it would not start. Is this typical for the bike? I have an outdoor cover but no garage. Any cold weather starting tips?, as its witerish here for 8 months out of the year.

Second Questing is, anyone else in NY to the north and work with any of the dealers? VT is not that far away so hello to you folks also.

Sorry for the long lurking and hello.

Rob

Hello Rob, welcome aboard. I have never had any cold start issues with my bike but I believe a few others here have. If memory serves me, I believe it is the idle set to low but not sure about that.
I am sure someone will chime who knows.

The best single investment I made for the cold temps in Colorado is my "Warm & Safe" electric jacket liner.

http://www.warmnsafe.com/

This fall I will be adding their new heated gloves to my collection too.

BTW, they offer a 20% discount to riders who have completed the MSF riders course!

Several bikes have had issues with the battery bolts being just a little too long. They bottom out as they get tight, all looks well but if you can move the wires at all you just need to place a washer on the battery terminal bolts.

There have been weak battery issues also. The Service Manual requires 12.8v out of the battery before any testing is done, mine has not been above 12.3 with a full charge, HD says that is OK. Most are just buying a good aftermarket battery and solving the problem. It should be a warranty issue, but I had no luck there.

Good luck with that and welcome to the fray.

If you bought it locally and it wasn't on a battery tender, the battery could be weak. I second the battery connection issue. Check the battery and connections.

That really cold week this winter when it got down into the 20's, mine started fine. ;)

When its cold out,( say 40*F), mine seems to want just the slightest amount of throttle while pressing the button. Otherwise, its button only. She idles just above 1000rpms now. Prior to the 5K maintenance, idle was 800rpm with the same behavior.

Thanks for the info about the battery.

I learned a little more about the bike over the last 400 miles. I seem to burn about an oz/100 miles. Fun stuff.

If I were to be starting her regularly in the 25-35 deg range I would run 5W40 Shell Rotella Synthetic oil.
