Had a rough ride home yesterday. While waiting in a line of traffic for the light to turn green the lady behind me decides to get an early jump on the light and puts me and my Uly on the ground. Luckily my large aluminum panniers took most of the impact. The tip of the rear fender was broken off, the mirror, handguard and brake lever were heavily scratched from the sliding on the ground but that was it. On wider avenues I tend to creep up to the front of the line between cars, but this section of the road wasn't wide enough( my panniers are pretty WIDE). It does reinforce my belief that lane splitting is a good defensive riding technique here in California. All in all it could have been much worse. My wife will take longer to forget this than I will.
You have to love to ride to understand.
Be safe everyone
Barry

On a bright note, the tip of the Uly fender is pretty ugly, I wish i could fine a good way to remove mine, i guess that is as good as any. glad you and your bike are ok. Keep riding!

Sorry to hear about the incident, but am glad you are OK.

What did your car wielding lady friend have to say after running you over?

Reminds me of when a lady rear ended my Ducati Monster. The Staintune steel mufflers pierced her bumper and the bike never even fell over. When I pulled the bike out of her bumper, it fell off! LOL!

Busted rear fender, hugger, and messed up tire. A slight dent in one of the mufflers. Sometimes we win! LOL!!

I was rearended on my 79 sportster by a neon in a very similar situation. (stopped at a light)
I would call it a draw.

Hers:
front bumper
header panel
hood

Mine:
fender+tail light
fender struts

The STEEL fender ate her plastic bumper so that my bike was stuck upright and the rear tire had to be uninflated to remove it.
I refilled the tire and drove home.

The SF Bay Area is a thrilling place to ride. I feel life a target *all the time*. Lotsa mid-life folks just learning to drive and it sux to be an invisible scooter rider.

*sigh*

Just a guess..was it on YVR?
