The sound of the fan bites and we all know it.
You don't speak for everyone. Some of us aren't bothered in the least by the fan noise. A bike is a machine, machines make noises, some different than others. What's the big deal?
If someone asks me about it, I tell them. If they think it's weird, who cares? I'm not trying to impress anyone with my bike purchase. |

I think this problem will eventually work itself out for those riders that think the fan noise IS a problem.
The complaints about fan noise seem to indicate these Uly riders are riding regularly without hearing protection. Since the wind noise by itself in the vast majority of helmets is enough to cause permanent hearing loss, in a year or two they'll notice their fans seem to be getting quieter until they no longer bother them.

I have to mute my XM satellite radio to hear if it is on. 
Seriously though, I bought the right side scoop to help the fan, so it may last longer. I've had one fan fail. Also it's been a hot summer here in FL, I figure every little bit helps. |

Agreed. I can't ride more than a few minutes without getting tinnitus. I can't imagine riding all the time without ear plugs. I don't hear the fan most of the time. |

Same here, or should I say hear? 
I ride with earplugs (industrial strength) except when I go on a short ride less than 20 or 30 minutes.
I find that riding with earplugs cuts down on the fatigue too. Go figure? |

Yea, I'm kind of big on the issue.
First time I had my hearing professionally checked (when I was 22) I found out I already had ~40% high frequency hearing loss. (OH! THAT'S what that constant ringing in my ears is!) My Dad was a heavy equipment operator and when I was a kid I spent a lot of Saturdays at work with him, usually standing fairly close to the International UD-14 diesel engine in the Koehring 305 dragline he operated. I shudder to think what the dB level was; neither one of us knew any better back then.
Anyway, the audiologist about freaked and read me the riot act about taking care of the hearing I have left. I haven't always done the best job of that, but I always wear ear plugs when riding. I don't know how people can stand to ride without them- helmet wind noise drives me nuts. |

With three possible exceptions.
1. Deafness - Some higher pitched tones are not audible to older people.
2. Low expectations. Some may have never hear other bike fans to compare with and figure that's the way fans sound.
3. Emotion, Brand loyalty fearing that speaking ill may bring bad luck on the manufacture when in fact its just the fan making people question the quality of construction.
No one cares that the fan runs, those of us not in the above categories prefer something better. That does not make us disloyal. |

Brad you forgot one:
4. People who simply don't give a rat's ass about the noises a fan makes.
Some of us have good hearing, high expectations for the performance of their motorcycle, and a willingness to find fault in a bike or brand when we actually find fault with it. We just don't see the big deal when it comes to the fan noise. |

I wonder if the hairdryer lovers would be disappointed if the fan was quiet and still did its job?
I wonder if they had a choice.... would they pick the shreeking loud fan over a quiet efficient one? |

Good grief. Of course I wouldn't be "disappointed" if it were quieter, but I certainly wouldn't pay a dime more for a quieter fan or spend hundreds of dollars for some aftermarket solution.
It's not complicated. Some folks simply aren't bothered by the fan. |

I don't get it either. It don't think anything about the fan running.
My Goldwing is liquid cooled and when the radiator fans kick on (both of them!), they make noise. Wooo-hooo, who cares?
My car has a fan too. It makes noise.
I don't use a hair dryer...those are for women. LOL! |

I can understand people objecting to the fan noise and wanting to do something about it. What I can't imagine is that this would be a "deal breaker" for anyone considering buying this bike. |

Bingo, I think that's all anyone wants. Haven't heard of anyone selling their bike because of the fan noise.

I agree 100%.... however It has cost Buell some sales. There are folks that are trying to decide between several excellent bikes. The details could make or break the sale.

I know two people who bought other bikes because of the fan noise, one is now on an 18,000 BMW GS and the other is on a ktm 950 adventure. Both werre intensely interested in Buell, when I rode up to let em test ride they both thought I was playing some sort of practical joke.
Neither thought they would ride around on a hairdryer. Those of us that live in the country really find loud noises objectionable. In the city I can hardly hear the fan running, so it has something to do with ambient noise levels. |

Holy crap!! What an over-generalization!!!!
Guys, this is amazingly simple stuff. It doesn't have to do with ambient noise, or where you live, or your level of hearing, or your expectations, or the time of the sunrise in Kalamazoo, MI. SOME PEOPLE ARE NOT BOTHERED BY THE FAN NOISE. No excuse for it, they just don't take issue with it. I know it's a hard concept to grasp for some of you, but there it is. |

I will be 56 years old in Sept. Until this may I had never been in LA and hadn't flown in over 12 years. One of these days I will be in New York, Haven't eaten out of a dumpster since my college days in 1974 tho, so I am a little shakey on the etiquette. A little despondent today, been getting calls from Bonneville, hard to believe the friends that develop and we've only met three times at speed week. |

Thanks for the offer, but I expect to be spoiling a new generation of Elliotts over christmas. It soulds like 8 of the tikes will be home and about half of them stay with me. Why any parent would leave children in my care is beyond me. Altho I have never actually broken one yet. Nothing beats managing a small herd of nieces and nephews at Christmas. |

You mean to tell me that strange whine I hear after a few miles is a fan. Wow...all this time I thought it was the turbocharger. Honestly though, with earplugs and the race can I can hardly hear it. |

I find the fan sort of charming.

A few times I have had the extreme grinding sound, but for the most part I get a fairly high pitched scream sound when compared to the Fans on my other bikes.

New bolts for the sidestand didn't come in yet but they will call me when they do.

I kinda like the fan noise.. it drowns out the spark knock....
I also gives you a chance to whip out a witty retort.. when somebody asks if your bike is still running.. right up there with.. "hey buddy ya got a head light out" |
