So,am I the first to crash one??OK,so it wasn't a "crash" per se.Well,I took a test ride today on the Uly demo at Vallejo and all was going well until I pulled of the road to turn around in some dirt.Sloped to the right and I turned to the right, hit the fork stop, went to put a foot down and there was nothing in reach.Over I went, broke a front turn signal lense, scratched the mirror and r/hand guard a tiny bit, scuffed frame slider, and the bit on the end of the bar holding the handguard on was MIA.Looked all over and never saw it.The salesman just laughed when I told him.Interested to see if/what they charge me.
Sure hit that fork stop fast--definitely not like a dirtbike.

Now my impressions.Shifting was not as much an improvement as I would have thought with all I had been reading.I was just off my Triumph Sprint as I was swapping sprockets on the S-2.Shifting was smoother on Trump.Someone mentioned it shook like a paint-mixer at idle,I'll have to agree. It smooths out as the revs rise, though.Cornering was unreal, you could lean forever with confidence.I can see these bikes embarassing the sportbike poserboys.Great seat, but really needed the low version to avoid any future get-offs.It weaved through downtown traffic like a hot knife through butter.Definitely an urban assault bike.

Hello FMJ,

Sorry to hear about your get-off. Hope you're okay.

How does the steering lock compare to that of an S-2?

Any reason why I shouldn't run out and buy a Uly asap?

Your thoughts are valued (plus I got a 2 thumbs up from Matty).

Wow, I was totally amazed by the new transmission and clutch setup. Far beyond anything ever offered from the boys previously. Very little hand or foot effort required, quick shiFts, NO missed shifts... I've not Been able to stop raving about the bike.
Maybe I need to lube my cable??? =)
I didn't get an impression that the Ulysses shakes any more than the tubers do, but yes they all shake at idle. As I told a little kid the other day, "It's supposed to shake like that."

Clutch effort was really nice, forgot about that. And darn thing had about the same(or so it seemed) steering lock as my S-2.Not really, but needs MORE,bad.I could see it as an addition but not instead of my S-2.It really felt strange to get back on my Sprint for the ride home.Mirrors are about as useful as the rest of the Buell line-up.Too much shaking to make out any details. And they got to get a pipe for pete's sake.Lacks character without any exhaust noise.

Hello FMJ, the lack of steering lock on the S2 is simply something I've adjusted to. OTOH I feel like my DRZ400S has no steering lock! :-)

I guess I don't see it as a big deal unless one is trying to "power-steer" in the dirt. Which is not how I would ride a Uly. But it shouldn't be an issue cruising down a dirt or gravel road.

Hmmm... Think, think, think....

On a B.R.A.G ride two weeks ago our fearless leader (Ulysses-mounted) went down on a tight decreasing-radius right-hander on Arizona hwy 191. He had all luggage mounted (he crashed on the left side at relatively low speed). All damage appeared to be cosmetic and was quite minor. The hard bags were only scraped and functioned as very effective crash protectors. I was impressed. The bike was rideable and in fact finished the ride (with another rider; fearless leader may have broken his ankle).

I didnt crash but I bashed er ... seomthing ... lane splitting. not much damage except like Jim, I lost the little plastic plug, and few bloody knuckles

FMJ - does the any part of the swing arm get scraped when you go down? I"m thinking of getting those swing arm pucks.

those handguards really dont' protect very well, but they do an excellent job of deflecting air, rain and debris.

the bike does really tight turns when you put your weight on the outside peg, and lean the bike waaaaaay over. You'd be shocked how far the bike will lean over at really low speeds and not fall over. just dont stop mid turn :P

No marks on swingarm at all.Fortunately no luggage on it either.I got a chance to sit on Madduck's Uly that Ferris is riding with the low seat and it really makes a difference.Left foot was almost flat on the ground.
And I was witness to how far they can lean as I was following quite close to Ferris's back wheel the last couple of days on some really sweet back roads.

I haven't dropped mine yet but close though.
I stopped on an uphill dead end and while trying to turn around I started to fall to the left towards the downhill side of the road. I had to quickly slide off the seat to the left and bunny-hop till I got it going enough to sit up on the seat again. Pretty much how you had your get-off I think but I saved it luckily.
I'm half tempted to try my hand at re-shaping the foam in the seat to make my own low version since the low seat is not going to be available until sometime in October according to my dealer.

I don't think there will be many crashes on the Uly because it handles so well at speed but I can imagine a lot of low speed manuvering fall-overs with the bike being so tall.

I still think it's going to be one of the top sellers in the country over the next couple years because it's such a great bike overall.

"I'm half tempted to try my hand at re-shaping the foam in the seat..."

That seat has some type of new high tech foam or insert or something in it (I read that on the Buell page I think). So you may have to approach it from taking a layer off the bottom to preserve the "good stuff" on top.

If you dig into that, let us know what you see. There may be something there for do-it-yourself cures for leadbutt.

how was it to pick up the Uly off the ground? I'm curious if Its something one person can do in say, mud or on loose ground.
