What is the best way to take the front forks off because I got into a little fender-bender and the headlight and the bracket were smashed so in order to put the new bracket on I think I am going to have to take the forks off.

Also, did I get ripped off?? the dealer charged me 180 bucks for a new headlight and as far as I can see J&P Cycles can get me a 7" sealed beam headlight for $20 if it is the same headlight. Have any of you guys had to go through this experience?

Thanx a bunch
Ben

Ben....do you have a service manual? If not, look up the S1 manual in the Knowledge Vault (KV for short). It's a very simple process. Just remember to tighten everything to STOCK torque levels. If you don't have a torque wrench, it's a definate "must have" for home wrenching.

Good luck!

Ben -- like Lake sez -- it's no biggie at all -- I'd recomend dropping one for let at a time, and replaceing the headlight mount on that side, button that side up, and then repeating for the other side (you'll need a way to get the front wheel off the ground, and removing it (the wheel) make the process easier once your there

HD charges a lot for that lamp -- see the Knowledge Vault -- it's also a BMW part (the lamp itself, not the housing), and this is one of the few places that Beemers are cheaper

me, I won't run an old sealed beam anymore -- the new H-series bulbs are soooo much better!

You will have to get creative with hoisting and support while the forks are off , here's what I do ..............

hoist

Some of the other members here use slings and a come along / chain hoist , rigged to the rafters.

I use 2 Ratchet straps off the frame tubes up to a big I beam that crosses my garage, well separated so there's not too much swing.

Thanks for your input I have a 2 ton hoist on rollers from my ceiling that isn't the problem and I read the service manual to get the forks off to replace the bracket however I was wondering if one of you could measure the diameter off the front of your headlight because if it is just a 7" headlight I can replace it with a nice HID or a halogen light for $130 bucks less than what they want for a replacement.

You can just remove the upper triple tree. No sweat, no lift needed.
