Roelf, Suggestion on nicks in powder coat on front rim; Find fingernail polish that matches to use for touch-up. Thanks man, was wondering what to do with those two spots, I'll give that a go. I haven’t tried it, but I read somewhere you can make a good locking tool from a section of a broken belt and a piece of wood. Wrap the piece of wood around the sprocket and screw the ends to the wood. It shouldn’t be too hard to work out something along those lines. And this as well! Thanks. ------------------------ Bearing assembly looks good Etennuly. Probably telling that is was beefed up. |

I don't have mine apart yet. According to a very helpful lengthy conversation with Lance at St Paul HD, it was determined that this new style combined bearing and spacer became the standard after some date in early 06. The load bearing capability of this one I would think could handle several times the load. The incorporated spacer transfers a large part of its load to the inner row of ball bearings. Where you see the ball bearings in my picture, there is a second row on the other side. I don't see a failure in the future of this new bearing assembly from its normal loading. I am excited to see if mine has the old separated type and how this fits in its place. Going to be a couple of weeks before I get back to this job. I will take pics and report back when I get there. |

LOL makes sense why I couldn't pull out the "spacer" with my thumb and forefinger. |

So Nate, your bike has this upgraded larger number of balls one piece assembly then? |

I guess so. I dug out the 2008 manual and there it was clear as day. Yeeesss I know I should have had the book open on my lap before touching the bike (But I'm dumb). I drove it to work today in the lovely 34F drizzle and it ran fine. I really think it was the tires now. They're not much better than rim protectors now I had to be really gentile with the control inputs. Spun the rear in second - woke me right up and went to tiptoe mode! |

Ha! I guess sometimes it could be possible to have what sounds like a bad tire actually be a bad tire! but who would have thunk it?!? |

Not something you dare hope with a Uly, no. |

Alright, it's been a couple of months but here's a short update. We decided to have the shop take a crack at it. We did tear down the entire bike, with the exception of the crankcases. So all the shop had to do was split the cases, clean the interior and replace the bearings. You can see the pictures on Facebook here and here That's phase 1 and 2. Work was done by Twin Motorcycles. I'll report back once the bike is together again . |

The gears and shift forks look like new! Twin Moto appears to do clean and thorough work. |

Yeah, one of the upsides to the tear down is that we have been able to confirm it's very likely to have done no more than the 22.000 kilometers it displays on the ODO. Twin Moto appears to do clean and thorough work. Definitely very happy with Twin, yep. |

Well a week or so ago I got into mine. I got the pulley off then cleaned the area. I posted on another thread as to how it went. When riding, as near as could be heard, mine sounded very similar to yours. Loud enough to be heard over wind and exhaust noise. Enough to make me cringe. As it turned out once cleaned to dissemble, I could not remove the spacer. I thought it may have been stuck so I pulled the seal and to my surprise the double row single piece bearing unit was already in my bike. Good oil ran out of it. I did a look with magnifying lens then took close up pictures and zoomed them in on the computer. Not my issue at all. So with some suggestions heard here I investigated the idler pulley bearings. I had to try to make them feel bad turning by hand. Once removed from the bracket I could feel roughness in one bearing. There is very little rust on the balls, some galling, but mostly dry hard compacted grease. I'm sure there are other contaminants in it, but I picked some of the grease out, It was dry and hard. So a new seal on the 5th gear shaft and a couple $5 bearings fixed mine.

I do feel more confident knowing the updated style out put shaft bearing is in there. |

Hah, lucky SOB We actually exchanged the entire idler pulley assembly for another one, which didn't change the sound. So I really really hope we properly eliminated that possibility. Would be a shame to have replaced all those bearings for nothing. Glad you found your problem though. Good work! ---------- As for us (that's my dad and I), we're in the process of reassembling right now. I'll post some pics or some video once we're done. Ran into some trouble with the clutch cable bolt snapping, so it's taking just a bit longer than expected. (Message edited by falloutnl on February 23, 2018) |

Ha ha! I laugh actually about that. When you posted that you had swapped the idler with no change, I kind of wrote that off as being the problem because a simple inspection of the pulley showed it to be ok. Because there are two bearings there was no expected side slop movement and turning it in the bracket I could just barely feel any roughness. This bearing failure was not evident until I took the axle and spacers out of the pulley to turn the bearings individually. |

My dad actually took the bike out for its first post-op ride. Would have done it myself, but have been overwhelmed with work. The old man couldn't wait to find out whether we had solved the issue though. Good news, it's fixed. The whining sound is gone. We're not sure which bearing it was, since every one in the gearbox was exchanged for a new one. But it did indeed come from there. This is the picture he sent as he called me up to tell me. Can't wait to ride the Uly again come spring. Speaking of which, it was already sort of in the air today. |
