Got my X1 on the road after a budget top end rebuild completed last November.

Have about 200 miles on it and I am experiencing shaking and shuddering under wide open throttle in
1st usually in the 4-5k rpm range. It almost feels like the bucking you get when lugging an engine.

I am not sure if its an engine issue it almost seams like a driveline problem similar to the way my old truck felt when the trans mount was rotten. Doesn't seem to happen in 2nd or 3rd gear (or up).

The engine starts easily, runs smooth and doesn't seems to be using oil.

Bike has a force winder intake, race ECU wileyco exhaust. New plugs and I just set the TPS. Also the head temp sensor is newish and the O2 sensor is new. No trouble codes, and the AFV is in the 120 range.

front and rear isolators where replaced by me several years but only a few k miles ago they are the newer style tuber mounts

Does it happen under hard acceleration and goes away?
Is it fine if youvease into the gas and ride like a old man?
If these are true check and see if your rear tire moved forward or condition of your belt. The belt could be skipping teeth on the rear pulley.

If it's a worn gear dog, it's one massive clunk on hard acceleration, and then it won't do it again until you shift again. So it doesn't sound like it is that.

If it is backfiring when stuttering, it could be crank position sensor, but it doesn't sound like it is that either.

The drive belt is jumping on the front pulley.

A stiffer XB belt can cause this, maybe a worn pulley too

I do have the XB belt and the belt is loose as a goose. I will tighten it up some and try again.

well to avoid the jumping with the XB belt I have to run it very tight.

It seems like the only way to do this properly is to use an idler pulley.

Yes tight belt on a tuber = BAD

Mine is a little diffrent XB Swing arm on X1
But here is my tensioner.

That's odd. I've had an XB belt on my (considerably modified) S2 for quite a while without any issues like this. I set the belt tension the way I did with the original style belt, so it's not 'super tight', nor is it 'scary loose'.

How many miles are on your X1? Is it possible the 'slipping' is actually the splines wore out on the front sprocket and the front sprocket slips is slipping?

Just a thought...

1313 what PN belt do you have?
There is another thread about this and several of us have this problem.
I've owned my S3 since 05 and am positive the stiffness of the belt is causing the issue.
I've gotten away with a tightness that works, but not too tight, but if I adjust my preload for 2 up I have to readjust my belt.
I am adding an XB tensioner to my bike using a bracket a friend is machining for me so I can go back to a loose belt.
I have about 27k miles on mine and it was never a problem before I snapped the sportster belt that only had about 15k on it.

my front pulley isn't worn out, bike has 16XXX miles

I will try and suspend the bike by the tail and adjust the belt as tight as it can go without binding through the full range of motion.

But I see in my future either a new sportster belt or an idler pulley

If it's just one big hop, always in the same gear, and always just once after a shift, it's probably worn dogs in the transmission.

Doesn't sound like what the original poster is describing, but I thought I'd throw this out there for others following along at home.

Here is how I went about finding out if the belt is skipping and is it front or rear pulley.
On each pulley mark 3 dots one red one white and one yellow do the same to the belt in the same spot.
Get the beke to do the stutter then see if the spots are still in line if not the belt skipped and you can tell what pulley. I also had my son video it so I could see

1313 what PN belt do you have?

It starts with G0500 like all Buell belts, but unfortunately I am not sure what the digits are after the . It's the 128 tooth belt used on 'regular' XB's. Of course, that means that I'm not sure what revision of belt it is either (if there is a difference - that matters - there).

I thought I kept decent records, but I can't even find when I put the belt on. It's before I bought my house in 2010 - that I know for sure.

Good thing I'm never going to sell it...

So after 3 test runs to make the belt not skip it has to be tight enough that its going to bind in the upper travel.

I dug through my parts and found an oem belt that has to be nearly 20 years old. I am going to give that a try and think about making an idler pulley for the XB belt later on.

Well just to confirm no belt skip at all with the stock belt and its very loose.

I guess I have to decide on making an idler pulley or buying a surplus tuber belt from lance.

You should use a 2006 XB on the X1. Thats BS about the belt just jumping teeth cause its an XB. Been running that belt for around 15 years. It will jump if its too loose just as any other belt does. take it back and snug it up it some more to a better Crazy loose and that will stop.

I ran some SKS USA bearings in the PM for prob around a decade. Always careful on the specs..water and never had a tight belt.

My X1 runs better than yours too!
