High copper and lead - am hoping it's the rivets from the spring plate. Am planning on checking this weekend and am not riding it.
18,252 Changed right after buying, so unknown mileage or oil. Looked terrible, like it had never been changed. 19,305 This with Formula+. Moderate amount of fine metal, some on magnet, I don't like seeing more than this. After that changed mostly at 1-1.5k with Formula+, except once trying SYN3 (was slower shifting). 25,581 This with Formula+. 26,957 This is with Bel-Ray Sport Transmission Fluid. Oil looked better than in past, but there was a little foam on inside of the derby cover. I guess I couldn't see the high copper because doesn't reflect as much light. I'm sure the Bel-Ray didn't cause the high copper and lead. Clutch and shifting seemed the same as the Formula+, but in the end it seemed a little "grindy", but I thought was me getting lazy about pulling in the clutch all the way on quicker shifts. We'll see. It is a 2000 X1 |

I think the shift forks (on some models) and the crank bushings are bronze but not certain. The belt being tight early in life could cause premature wear on the transmission main shaft and sprocket bearings. I'm interested to hear what you find. How much does an oil analysis cost you? Is it just part of their service? |

The belt was adjusted like the FSM when I got it, but I found Buellistic's info pretty quickly, contacted him and fixed it - very sorry to loose him. Also changed the primary chain adjustment from 1/2" to 3/4" on his advice at around 22k. Analysis is $28 then was $3 to ship at the P.O.. I bought a 6 sample pack in advance for $132 ($22 each). |

Check out my pics from my spring plate and transmission bearing failure. I bought my M2 with 12.5K miles. The belt was too tight when I bought mine (per FSM). I also learned from Lafeyette (Buellistic) and corrected the belt tension to 3/4" right away. I then had a loose starter and was leaking primary fluid. I think I rode very low on primary for awhile which may have contributed greatly to my problems. Enjoy the pictures: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/563886.html |

Hey, thanks for that. My spring plate looks great. Everything in there looks great. When draining the oil (only 160 miles) there were a few some longer slivers which I haven't seen in the past. I bought a new spring plate so I put it in anyway. I'll see how it goes and have the oil analyzed again. |

I did a short run with Castrol "Power1 V-Twin 4T 20W/50" and there doesn't seem to be a problem with high copper and lead. I would've run it longer but the clutch was often dragging when hot, so I changed it early. This oil doesn't have much ZDDP so I wouldn't use it in the engine either. I'm back to Formula+ and the clutch and shifting is back to normal - great. |

The clutch still isn't disengaging that well sometimes when warm. I thought it was OK because it was fine for several rides, but now it's doing it again. So, it wasn't caused by the type of oil. |

Absolutely follow, to the T, your Field Service Manual on clutch adjustment. Do not skip any part of it. All of it is important! I too miss Buellistic. I've still got his number on speed dial. BadWeb benefited greatly from his knowledge and love for all Buell owners.

I love this stuff. . . . I now use Blackstone for the Ford Escape (140,000 miles), F250 (just got it's first oil change), the 2001 Subaru Outback (79,000 miles) and the 2017 Subaru Outback (hasn't had oil changed yet. Their work allows me to sleep at night knowing what's going on in the motor. Plus, I've had a couple great exchanges with them and they have a wonderful sense of humor. Does someone have a copy of Layfaette's Primary Adjustment 101 they can send me? |

I sent him a Primary 101. Yeah, I like doing oil analyses. It's fun for us gearheads. Once in a while is generally enough, but things haven't settled down yet and this is my bike so it gets a lot of attention. The clutch adjustment should be good as I checked it after this problem started, but I will check it again, maybe hot. I tried pulling a little oil out yesterday because it was slightly high, but we'll see. This is my first Buell/Sportster engine, so I'm still learning. |

Jim: Thank you . . . got the materials. They are amazing and remind me how much we miss Lafayette. He certainly left a legacy of knowledge. |
