I toggled the odometer trip button by accident instead of just resetting the mileage at a gas fill up, looked down at the speedo and saw that the X1W is about to turn 20,000 miles.
Time flies when you're having fun!

@Steveford – my X1W turned 24 this year : )

I just got my transmission back from R&D motorsports (got gears backcut) and am in the process of reinstalling it. Other things: have fresh clutch pack together (grenade plate removed!), rebuilt the front brake caliper, preparing to rebuild the master cylinder (brake is still mushy after multiple/careful bleedings), replacing intake seals, new injectors, returning stock muffler (from V&H – was a bit loud for me), and other odds and ends.

Waffling on whether to replace crankshaft seal, since it appears to be in OK shape (and I don't have the seal driver tool). Can't wait to get everything together and running again, hopefully before snowfall here in NE.

Been wanting to replace the grenade plate for a while now. The only thing I'm nervous about is the oil pump drive gear. Probably plan to replace it next season.

THANKS to everyone on this board who has put time into helping others maintain/improve their bikes (incl. Al at American Sport Bike). It's been fun and rewarding to learn this stuff – no way I could have done it without this community.

Cheers and happy holidays!

Hi Buellrobot , are you planning to ride the X1 a lot of just race it?

back cut gears good for racing, but if you ride a lot they start to jump out of gear when you back off in gear, more for all out racing & drag racing.

@Lakes – The transmission already had a tendency to jump out of 2nd gear. When I pulled it out I noticed wear on the dogs, so I called Mark from R&D (who seems to have a good rep on these boards). He asked how I use the bike and I explained I only ride street. He seemed confident and said he could improve the feel and longevity of the transmission. Hopefully it wasn't an unwise decision, but I guess time will tell.

@Phelan – 24k miles old.

Changed the primary oil from Amsoil to Formula +

Adjusted the clutch.

What a difference! I can find neutral without saying four letter words!

Nothing better than going for a test ride and the bike works better
Doing it in Ohio on Black Friday

Priceless

Buellrobot it will feel better for sure! thats if he knows how to back cut, i had back cut gears a friend did on my twin cam dyna, that shifted really quick & positive.
I was just looking at the miles people on the forum are saying they have done on there X1 20,000mile so if you are like that will be no problem. a street bike to me would cover 10,000mile or more per year. i do.

Locktited shifter tab back on, it came off last ride at a local intersection - rode my bicycle back and found it, hopefully it won't shake loose again. The whole linkage is getting a bit sloppy, it'll need attention before too much longer.

Plugged it into the battery tender.

Prolly oughta change the oil. 25K miles, I think, might be 26.

Went for what will be the last ride of the season. Just a quick blast up and down the highway. Bike runs great in cold air. 38 degrees makes for frozen fingers pretty fast but the Aerostich suit worked good. Winter arrives here tomorrow with a dumping of snow.

The 2002 book says 5 gallons (18.93 liters) total and .6 gallons (2.2 liters) reserve.

Hope you enjoyed your ride.

Today I found out the top bolt to the front exhaust hanger also held the rear suspension in place.

I was wondering why that bolt was so hard to get out after I took the nut off. Got it out and the back of the bike just drops a few inches. Learned my lesson. I guess I should have had the frame suspended...

Scissor jack or 2x4 between subframe and back tire or swing arm will also do the trick Val.

Fixed the oil leak I hope.
Discovered it needs a new battery right before I wanted to take it for a ride.
Adjusted the clutch cable after I got it running and took that ride.
Bolted the saddlebags to the saddlebag frame.

I think the S3 and S3T are one of the best looking bikes ever made.
Had to do a double take as I was walking into the house.

Wolf looks good
Personaly I think the S1 in bright yellow with race pipe & aftermarket number plate mount looks best.
But love my own M2 for riding not much to look at but feels great!!

The old Battery looks to be from 2008
All I know is, it could no longer do the job.

X1W back on the road. Finally running the way it should!

Engine had always run a bit rough (lots of decel popping + some throttle lag + hot) so I replaced a lot of things:

•Injectors
•O2 sensor
•Genuine James blue intake seals (got 1/4" ball-head hex bit w/ flex-shaft screwdriver. MUCH easier to tighten evenly/properly!)
•Manifold/throttle body seals

Did other things that may have helped reduce decel popping / throttle lag:

•Revert to stock muffler (from VH) – prefer the quieter can
•Relocated catch can to right of bike – downhill from breather bolts
•Cleaned starter contacts & solenoid plunger (terminals and ground were very clean from a few months back)

Made a few clutch/tranny improvements:

•Install Barnett clutch kit (no more grenade plate!)
•Transmission back cut (by R&D Motorsports)

Changed all fluids and adjusted clutch, chains, TPS & the like. Took off the tender... starter click-click-click. No start!

•Replaced starter/ign relays
•Replaced battery (only ~2 years old, but toasted)

Charged battery up, put it in and she fired right up. Only got to ride for an hour today, but dang – shifts buttery smooth, throttle super responsive, bike a tad more quiet, not a single decel pop.

Bike just about to turn 24k miles – here's to 24k more

I had to replace o2, cylinder head temp,2 speed sensors and rocker box gaskets. Less than 5k miles. Went to the track this summer and had way big fun.

Aired her up. Good ol' S3 feels the love.

Ready to ride to work tomorrow if weather is dry. Got full electric gear now. The riding season JUST got a few months longer (warmer)
