I don't condone this sort of thing, but I did find myself hitting 100mph @~7000 RPM today, in third gear. Does that sound about right f standard gearing? I have an XB12R sprocket and chain sitting in my room, but wondering if I should even bother. |

I don't condone that either. You'll be needing a bottom end rebuild in short time if you run that thing to 7 grand too often. I seem to remember that being the piston speed of a Formula One engine. Or if you're bragging, I'd mention my Ducati did 100mph in first gear. (I've changed the sprockets since.) |

It will go faster if your engine has the HP to pull that gearing in 5th gear... |

I'm not bragging by any means. I was just wondering if that sounds like standard gearing. This bike has about 50% more power than my last and I find myself "on it" a lot more than I would prefer tbh. It's just brief 10-15 sec intervals usually before I realize I'm being overtly stupid. |

Aint it Great Phelan :-) I enjoy the crap out of my X1 after the complete rebuild I regularly let it breath deeply as the spirit moves this old fat man.. That sounds about right I sometimes hit the limiter in first before I bother to look at the tach or speedo.. I can cruise at 80 M.P.H. @ about 3,000 rpms. |

If you post something like XX rpm at 80 in fifth...we'd more likely be able to help Also...what bike?? |

S2 with Tstorm top end (and I believe cams as well) and SE ignition. |

I don't spin mine to 7k...but my S2 has thunderstorm top end, X1 cams, and S1W race ignition. Stock gearing, and I run right around 4k at 80. I want to say my (also stock) S1W is closer to 4500 at 80...maybe 4300... The S1W definitely has more grunt coming out of corners...but I'd much rather cruise on the S2. |

My stock 99 x1 runs around 4000 at 80 also. |

At 7k you must be bouncing off the rev limiter, max power torque is well below that |

My X1 and S3T in top gear both turned the same R's. 3 grand was 62 mph, 4 grand 83 indicated and at 5 thou 100 mph. (Message edited by Jramsey on May 12, 2014) |

All i do is count how many teeth on sprockets both primary & secondary then work out final drive ratio. i had a twin cam 95 cubic inch 2001 Dyna, i think it had the same 5 speed gear box as the Buell. it had a final drive ratio of 3.42 & ran a stock 130 90 16" rear tyre i used to drag race it in screaming eagle street class, Trap speed in 4th gear with rev limiter set at 7,200 on the time ticket it read out at 122mph 103mph half track but not sure what gear i was in at half track best time was 11.2 but i could have ran high tens with a good rider. road it everywhere. road 1,000k to race then next day road home |

LOL. I should have put a winking smiley face up or something. Just razzin' ya, Ross. I think the SE ignition doesn't have a rev limiter. Anyway, you really have to weigh if you frequently find yourself wishing for a sixth gear vs. how hard does it launch. I'm comfortable cruising in fifth at 95 without feeling the engine is revving to high. At 100 for a while, I start to consider. |

Phelan, the stock pulleys on North American market S2's were a 61T rear and 29T front. Carburated S3's had the same pullies in '97 and '98. For some reason (better 1/4 mile times?) all the FI'd S3's had 61/27 pullies, which were the same as S1's and X1's. |

For my style of riding I rarely get over 80 mph and almost never hit 5th gear. My bike loves to sit around 4000 rpm on the highway. I prefer the acceleration over top speed. I had a 26 tooth on the front but eventually destroyed it (aluminium) after 15,000 miles. I ended up with the stock 27 tooth back on the front but swapped the rear to a 65 tooth sprocket off a Big Dog motorcycle.
I am thinking I may add a 26 tooth back on the front also. it makes the bike so fun for popping around town and lifting the front end a little. |

Also I should mention even with the bigger rear pulley I am still running the stock belt with plenty of slack. |
