Hi guys, need some advice. My 06 with 30k has recently started sputtering, missing, barely running when first fired up. I am in Florida and recent temps have been in the mid to upper 70s. As soon as it warms up after a few miles of riding, idle returns to normal. The bike is completely stock except I relocated the ECM. Tps and afv was reset about 2k ago and spark plugs are fresh too. No check engine lights either. It has me stumped since it runs perfect after it is warmed up. Thanks

Tomorrow I am going to check intake seals, plugs, and clean the iat sensor. I forgot to mention I cleaned the throttle body recently as well when I did the the tps reset.

First thing I would suspect would be a cold fouled plug. Even if it is fairly new. Then, a plug wire not pushed all of the way back on or loosened up on the coil end from moving them around. Look for damage on the front plug wire where it touches the steel idle screw cable. Most wore through at some point.

When starting cold letting it idle for a while is imperative. Turning the throttle will mess with the cold enrichment control of the ECM. These injected engines have no choke once you trip the ECM's cold plan it won't run right until warmed up.

Thanks Vern, I have a spare set of plugs I will throw in and see if that changes anything. I am very well aware of blipping the throttle when cold. Years ago I wet fouled a plug and had to ride on one cylinder to get home. I'm sure I could use a new set of wires as well since they are original but I added split loom on the front wire.

Update, I picked up a new set of ngk plugs went with the 9 heat range. I usually run 10r12a. The new plugs didn't change anything with the initial cold start idle so I ordered the Taylor wires form iron machine. They came in last night and I installed them and idle is back to normal. They were a pain to get seated, I had to pull the coil to get them seated on the coil side, coated them with lots of dielectric grease as well. Thanks again vern.

My 06 does the exact same thing, I have done everything. I have had it to three different shops. I have been told by many old Buell riders that it is just a Buell thing and to deal with it. So, I have.

My 06 doesn't spit, sputter, or carry on at all, hot or cold. It is not a "Buell thing".

Wiggle-test everything. Plug wires. ECM wiring. Check and re-check your TPS resets and your base idle adjustment. What is your hot idle speed? How are your throttle cables adjusted? Something is amiss, you just need to find it.

Great to hear the problem is fixed. I always try to start with the simplest cheapest fix first. I have seen many times where a new plug will get cold fouled and the owner cannot believe a new plug could possibly do that.

Was your front plug wire worn where the idle screw cable touches it?

Usually you can have good access to the coils with the air box base off.

Hey Vern, didn't you raise your coil up so the front plug wire went between the throttle cables? I know I did that and it allows less pressure on the wire with a straighter route to the plug. I think I raised the coil 3/4" with some spacers and longer bolts.

Uh.....it was nearly eight years ago.....I have not done 1,000 miles in the past year.....without going out in the shed to look, I think I tied the idle cable back a bit with a zip tie.
