Hey, Y'all - Wondering if anyone can shed some light (NPI) on an issue I had over the weekend. I was on a ride from San Diego to Las Vegas and all was well until I stopped for some lunch in Primm, NV (about 3/4 of the way there). I went to start my 08 XT up and I heard a "clink" then the display and lights shut off. Then nothing, i.e., with the ignition on I had no lights or indicators. I turned the key off and back on and still nothing. Trying to remain calm, I popped the seat off thinking a loose battery cable or ECM connector, and wiggled everything and all was tight. Turned the key and all was normal again - save for the reset trip odometer and clock. It did give one more hiccup (almost a stall) on the on-ramp, but nothing more after that. It wasn't until a couple hours later I noticed that my low beam wasn't working. High beam is fine. Never had issues like this in the past, and everything else has been running pretty smoothly. 18,000 miles and I'm pretty easy on it. Does this sound like a symptom of anything, or am I being a hypochondriac by proxy? Also, any suggestions for a replacement bulb, since I'm in the market? I was thinking of just the stock from American Sport Bike. Thanks very much, Russ | ||

I've had the same thing happen to me, ended up being loose battery cables, tightened them down and it has been good since. The reset clock and tripometer indicates power was lost to the instrument cluster, which usually means the battery was disconnected (or if you are unlucky you have an intermittent wire break) As for the headlight bulb, it is a standard H7 automotive bulb, any car parts store will have it. If you keep blowing bulbs, it may be a sign that your voltage regulator is failing. | ||

I would check the ground wires at the front of the steering neck. If they are good then put a cheap bulb in and see how long it last. If it blows it could be the Voltage Regulator or the Stator. Put a gauge on the battery and rev the motor up and see if you're getting any spikes. Mine would go up to 17 volts. I changed the VR and then blew it because the stator was bad. If you see voltage spikes or keep blowing headlight bulbs do all three stator test before you just throw a VR at it. A failure on any test will require a new stator. | ||

If I remember correctly, that was what happened to me when some of the contacts in my ignition cylinder went bad. Try wiggling the ignition switch a little while it's rotated in the "on" position to see if you can get the low beams and dash lights to come back on. I actually took my ignition cylinder apart and fixed it, but it was a bitch. |
