Just bought a '95 S2 and it's got no rear fender on it. I like returning them as close to stock as is possible. Question: did the 1995's come with a black plastic hugger/belt guard combination or the CF version that I see floating around eBay, etc.? Also, did the S2's share the same hugger with M2's or other models? |

I think it depended on when the bike was built. Early ones had black huggers because they didn't have the CF process down well enough to make them "pretty" enough not to coat; later bikes had CF. If it was CF, it was a green CF like the air filter. That's just from memory; perhaps someone like 1313 can chime in with some more substantial information. My '95, #1365, had a black hugger when I bought it. I found a green CF one and put it on, because I like the look. Not sure which is original, but I'm keeping them both in case that information gets published sometime. |

Oh, and any steel-swingarm hugger will fit and have the same general shape. More detail than that, though, will have to come from 1313. |

I think the earlier model year S2's came with a CF hugger. Later ones, like my '96, had the plastic. Also, earlier S2's had fiberglass body panels and tank. Later ones, came with ABS plastic. This is all coming from my 58 year old noodle! |

I don't think any S2 was ABS. There may have been some S2T parts that were - lowers, maybe? - but AFAIK all the S2 bodywork was fiberglass. S1's and S3's were the start of the non-fiberglass. Brankin? I *know* you have the answers... I just doublechecked my copy of "25 Years", and the first mention of non-fiberglass bodywork is in the S3/M2/S1 section. Everything in the S2 section refers to the hand-molded, multi-curved fiberglass process. And EVERY S2 has an ABS fuel cell, under a fiberglass cosmetic cover. |

I have two S2 instrument panels for my S2, one is fiberglass, one is ABS. |

Arrgh...a memory test on New Years Day...YES, I just got up (which will make getting up for work tomorrow - at about the same time I went to bed this morning - a real bear...), but let's see if I can set all the facts straight. The 1995 S2 hugger was Carbon Fiber. 1996 saw the black painted fiberglass part. No S2 ever came with a plastic hugger - although since the later, early M2's and S3's were very close in shape (and they all had the same mounting points) it's conceivable that a plastic hugger could be mounted to an S2. All S2 bodywork was fiberglass in one form or another; 1995 bodywork being polyester resin, and 1996 being epoxy resin. The polymer instrument panel, if ever mounted on an S2, would've been late in 1996. The 1997 S3 instrument panel (which was plastic) was a direct carryover (in shape and mounting) from the S2's (other than S3 vs. S2 badging). Later early S3's had different mounting of the instrument panel (mounting holes on the edges, instead of on 'top' like the S2's). And, of course, later S3's had a different instrument panel altogether. The S2 fuel cell was actually some form of PE (polyethylene). That's right, just a big milk jug. If memory serves the S2 was LDPE (Low Density - truly a milk jug) and the X1 was HPDE (High Density), but I'm not going to state that as absolute fact. The painted tuber tanks were Nylon. The only S2 components 'plasticized' were the air cleaner backing plate (which I doubt made it in time for production - maybe just replacement parts, or perhaps very late '96 S2's) and the instrument panel (as discussed above). The sprocket cover was eventually changed to plastic, but I can't recall if that happened during the S2 days or just later tubers. Attempts were made to make the headlight bucket (the fiberglass bucket that the headlight mounted into) out of plastic (with metallic reinforcements), but those attempts were never successful. All the S2T body components (lowers, saddlebags) were out of epoxy resin fiberglass. Since ABS was mentioned a couple of times, want to know an interesting fact about ABS? Loctite actually attacks ABS, so if you ever use Loctite attaching an ABS part care should be exercised not to get any Loctite on the plastic. Maybe things have changed since then but at least that was the story back in the day. HAPPY 2013 EVERYONE! 1313 |

...I figured Brankin would have all that stored away in some dark recess of that dark mind of his... |
