I've seen/read many similar threads on this topic, but my question is this... Bike has under 5,000 miles. Bought it two weeks ago, rode it 200 miles home. Great. Yesterday, went for a ride. Rough idle that fluctuated about 400rpms higher than standard. Rough throttle from idle, cut out when starting from stop-lights, at low RPMS. Felt very under-powered, on the verge of cutting out the whole ride home. I've read a million worst-case-scenarios. Does this sound like it could just be fouled plugs? (2008, very low miles.) |

I would check the ECM for cracks it causes all kinds of havoc on the way the engine runs. You can also try doing a tps reset it should correct the idleing problem. I had my ECM replaced under the federal emission warranty which covers the bike for five years or 15 or 16 thousand miles from the date of oringanal purchase |

The ECM cracks usually effect where the connectors meet the body of the ECM. This is caused by the seat flexing, and pressing down on the connectors. There is a lot of ideas on relocating the ECM or bracing to hold the seat up. I think larger people are likely to have more problems (more weight pressing down). Also, a lot of problems caused by grounds not well connected. There are 3 or 4 wiring harness to frame points, and battery to frame. Lots of info if you search either of these. Because you have a real low miles bike, it's likely these issues haven't been taken care of. |

I check the ECM. It still looks brand new, no cracks or on the unit or any of the connectors. Went ahead and changed the spark plugs for the hell of it. Bike turned over, seemed to be idling okay, and then a mile down the street died and wouldn't start back up. |

Sounds like you have one fouled plug - Change your plugs - NGK iridium - tighten properly Re route your breather Run a tank with Sea Foam Anytime you have a wire disconnected - use dielectric grease. Clean your ground straps TPS adjustment. |

Your IAC might need to be cleaned out |

Nateba, if your ECM connectors are cracked, it will not be very obvious visually. You almost will need a magnifying glass to see if a tiny crack appears where the connector enters the ECM. If you see that it is cracked at all, it indicates that the seat may have pushed it down and damaged the circuit board inside the case. The board cannot withstand any flexing. When it does flex, the solder joints break and your bike will run like crap. Many of us have experienced this first hand. Thanks. |

It may be a fouled plug but my vote also is to re-check the ECM closely. We had ECM issues with both '09 Ulys, fortunately at different times. Since we were familiar with sick ECM symptoms when the XT's ECM gave up the ghost, the trouble shooting process went faster than our first go around with the X. If you had access to a proven working ECM, you could swap it out and see if the bike runs like it should. If the ECM is the problem, make sure you do the ECM relo when you put the new ECM in. The process is easily found here by searching. Any of us who have lived thru sick ECM woes feel for you but the bright spot is a replacement EBR ECM improves the bikes performance significantly. Good luck! (Message edited by fltwistygirl on November 06, 2012) |

Thanks for all the responses. I already changed the plugs, took the battery and had it completely re-charged (otherwise alway on a tender.) The bike started and ran OK for a short trip. I'm going to go ahead and order a new ECM from EBR and probably a new battery as well, since I believe the one I have is the original. Probably should order a new pair of spark plug cables as well. My huge fingers mangled one of them while changing the plugs. |
