The other day I thought I'd crank up the preload on the rear shock using the little wheel next to the helmet lock. All it did was turn and turn. It never tightened up and didn't appear to do anything for the ride. The little cable or whatever is still connected as far as I can see. Before I go taking everything apart, I was wondering if anyone knew what causes this and what's the fix? Thanks.

Check the collar on the shock body. It should actually compresses the shock when dial in the preload. If not, then you will probably need to recharge the preload circuit.

How many turns did you go? It's a long way from the solo rider 6+/- to the full load setting.

I bet I cranked the thing a good ten times. I would've thought I'd feel some tightening as I cranked it clockwise(like the arrow indicates) I thought I saw a thread a while back of someone who fixed this problem. I'll have to research how to "recharge the preload circuit". I'll let you know as I find things out.

I think this is what you are looking for. I haven't tried it yet, but need to.

Ditto on the thanks!
I am pretty sure my '08 is not working right. I was waiting on my owners manual, but am not able to see or feel any real difference in the adjustment.

That's interesting, I have seen a few people mention that they accidentally loosened the banjo when installing the comfort kit, lost some oil too. This could make sense. Mine only feels loose at full out but starts to get firm right away, can't feel the detents after two or three turns. Guess I'm fine.

I just checked mine and there is no resistance for the first 5 turns (10 clicks). Has anyone done this on the Uly yet?

On a proper functioning unit resistance shouldn't be felt until 3-4 complete turns. Much beyond that and you've lost some of the charge.

Dennis,

Mine is actually opposite of that result. I get one click for every 2 turns.

I ride mine in the middle of the road, but when going two up, I tighten it to full pre-load. That usually equates to 8 turns for 4 clicks.

Of course, my turn is not a full rotation I don't believe. Either way, there is a noticeable "click" and it is about 4 clicks off full pre-load to a middle setting and probably another 4 clicks to the minimum setting.

It's a lot of turning if you have not used it before.

Good luck

I just did mine (re: link posted by Nvr2old). It is obviously not as easy on the Uly, do to the fact that everything has to be removed to keep the adjuster at the highest point. There were no sign of leaks, so the only thing I can think of is evaporation (right behind the fan).

When I started, I had nothing for 5 full turns (10 clicks). Now I have action at about 1.5 to 2 turns. It works smoothly all the way to 20 (max). I did not use new crush washers, but I don't see signs of it leaking. I used hydraulic jack oil (as did the post on the link above) because that's basically what the preload adjuster is.

Now I get to put the bike all back together. I might add that this time I did it by the book (maintenance manual). Since I have all the luggage, I thought I would save some time cutting corners when I installed the comfort kit. I think it actually took less time by the book.

I hope this helps anyone that has the same problem.

According to the manual, backing the preload all the way out sets it up for a rider 30 lbs heavier than me.

According to my 2007 Owners Manual, anything under 170lb is 4 turns (8 clicks) from minimum.
