My (new to me) 2000 X1 has about 5300 miles on it and I would like to change the tires. The bike came with the PM polished wheels. It has a 170 rear on it now. Should the rear be a 180? I have a Dyna Wide Glide that I use for a cruiser so my Lightning is really just for fun. I would like sticky good cornering tires. I live in Florida so the tires should heat up fairly quickly. I really don't ride the bike in the rain but I don't want track only tires just the closest thing that are still acceptable for street use. What do you folks suggest for tires..brand and size? I am partial to the Metzeler Sportecs. They warm up pretty quick and get real good traction. They also last a decent amount of miles(off the track). Excellent wet weather behavior also. I am on my fourth set and will keep with them. | ||

I have the PM wheels. Is a 180 55 the correct tire?....I do like what I have read about the Metzeler Sportecs. They look like a good choice. I don't want to lose handling with the 180 but I thought with the PM wheels the 180 was correct. Thanks, Skip} | ||

You can use either a 180/55 17 or 190/50 17. The 180's will turn in faster and are a popular track day choice over the 190's. Because of the steeper profile of the 180 take nothing away from its capability. It's as equal as a 190 in all other aspects. The 190's are more progressive on turn in over a 180 and if you prefer not to push hard turning in the 190 is a better choice of tyre I think you'll find. Rocket | ||

Thanks folks, I am going to order some Metzeler Sportec's in 180 and 120. Since the 180s fit on the PMs just right I am going to go with them. I will post my results. Skip | ||

What is the best way to decide if your tires need replacement? Can you use tread depth etc. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks | ||

Funny wear patterns, lots of debris cuts in the tread, wear bars worn down to, tire threads showing through, wide freeway flat center with high apex corner/shoulders making cornering transitions somewhat spooky, age or apparent aged hardness of the tires, weather/ozone cracking in the sidewalls or tread transition. Basically, if you're starting to wonder if it's time to change the tires then it probably is.  | ||

I have the cast rims on my X1 (polished) and like the application/looks of the Scorpion Syncs on the new cityx. On the X1 now are 170/60s due for replacement...will the Scorpion 180/55 fit? | ||

OK...checking elsewhere on Badweb the answer (Cityx tires on an X1 with cast wheels) appears to be "yes but you may not like the way it handles". What does the "170" or "180" indicate...the mounted/unmounted width edge to edge or along the radius of the arc? Either way, 10 centimeters is like 3/8" or so. I frankly don't see how that's a huge enough difference to cause a catastrophic handling situation. BTW the /55 or /60 is the sidewall height, right? What brands of tire do the Harley/Buell dealerships carry? Will they mount a 180/55 if I tell them to? I called the dealer near my house today and he gave me no info, just said to bring it in so they can write up the service order. I would love to install my own tires, but I have no idea if I should even try it. I don't have a torque wrench or wheel balance. |
