I got off my butt yesterday and took a ride. I've been using the folks on this board to get my Buell fix for a while and now it was finally my time.

I left Pumpkin Center at 6:00 AM with no real destination in mind -- just the ride. It was a bit cold but I just 'knew' it would warm up when the sun came up, so I headed west. Crossed into Tennessee and stopped for some breakfast at a Waffle House (I believe I was at exit 407 on I40?) Came back towards the east on I40 and caught I81 North -- I still didn't have anywhere to go or anyone to see. Not very far on I81 I saw the 25E west and remembered that I have an uncle living very near the 25E and I75 crossroads in Keavey Kentucky so I headed west on 25E (did I mention that it continued to get colder and colder?) I finally made it to my uncle's house and when I shut down the M2 I realized I was pretty danged cold. We spent a few hours talking and having some lunch and it was a great visit. I knew that I was getting ready to freeze my butt off getting home so prior to leaving I had my uncle drive me down to the local Wal-Mart (don't you just love Wal-Mart? They've got everything!) I picked up some big old heavy wool lined leather gloves, some insulated underwear, and most importantly 6 packages of Hot Hands (those little packets that put off wonder heat when unpackaged and shook up a bit.) I think in total I had 24 seperate packages of Hot Hands. I left Corbin/Keavey at 3:30 PM and it was still very nice and I made it all the way to I81 south before it started getting noticeably cooler. I eased on down to I40 and stopped for gas, drink, bathroom. While stopped I opened up half of my Hot Hands, activated them, and started shoving them in to all the pockets, down my shirt, in the big old gloves, you can see where I'm going. If you're ever stuck remember those little things are really nice and can help you get home when the weather is killing you (my dad showed me the trick years ago and we were in El Paso trying to get east on I10 without freezing.) I regress, anyway I get all my stuff on, helmet, gloves, bike's running, etc, and my phone rings. I think about ignoring it but I haven't spoke with the wife and she hasn't a clue where I'm at and naturally caller ID tells me it's her. I finally manage to open the phone up and tell her to call me back in a couple of minutes -- gotta get some stuff off so I can talk to her. I turn off the bike, take off the gloves and helmet and prepare for incoming. She calls back and we have a nice little conversation about my not getting the swimming pool shut down or the back deck stained (I'd promised that would be done;) ) and I tell her I'm on my way and should be home in about 3 hours -- promise to do the pool and deck today.
While putting my 'stuff' back on my freaking $500.00 HD jacket zipper decides that it's been load tested enough and it splits. It's always under stress with my svelte 250lb ( I LMAO when Court used that line) body inside and I guess the added underwear and packets of Hot Hands in every possible opening just made the zipper spin a bearing. I take everything back off and go in to the truck stop side of the gas station where they have everything in the world. I purchase myself a nice big roll of duct tape. Get my jacket back on (all this time the Hot Hands are continuing to heat up -- the package says they don't reach their intended temperature for about 30 minutes and it's been about 30 minutes) use the snaps at the top, middle, and bottom and then with three big old strips of silver tape I 'fix' my jacket. So no I've got bright orange gloves (that are very warm by the way) and duct tape all over the front of me. I'm looking like Joe Shit the Rag Man, but I'm warm. The rest of the ride was uneventful and I was able to stay pretty comfortable except my feet were getting cold. The rest of the ride all I could think about was a post I saw here about the GIVI A760 Universal Windscreen -- I would've paid good money for one last night and I'm currently waiting for Arizona Motorsports to confirm my most recent purchase ;)

I made it home safe, sound, and not too cold. It was a great day. The M2 perfomed flawlessly; just freaking wonderful. I got somewhere between 30 and 50 MPG (kind of lost track when I started doing the anti-cold thing.) It didn't spit up, cough, puke, use any oil and when I put it in the barn last night I had ridden 603.6 miles a new one day record for me on the Buell.

It was a wonderful, mind-clearing, back to my roots kind of ride. It made me feel so much better, good, normal.

Sorry to waste your time if you happened to read all this drivel. Got to go shutdown the pool and stain the deck or I'll be in deep trouble. Later!

:) I was freezing my *ss off at that same exit... the southern most Corbin exit off of I-75. I know that truck stop if you were where I think you were. I was on my way to (an eventually aborted) trip to deals gap. Had been riding through Kentucky for two hours, on friday of labor day weekend traffic, at night, through construction sites in a thunderstorm.

Sure is a pretty area though.... at least when the lightning struck and you could see it anyway.

Thanks for the fun report!

Hey Reepicheep,

25E is the second exit as you're northbound on I75. I believe it's about 3 miles north of the one you're talking about. 25E is a good ride after you get out of the built up areas. If you continue south, on I75, just a few miles you've got the Wal Mart that saved me -- and it's just north of the TN line.

If you've got a Gap run planned let me know and I will try to make it over that way -- I would invite BuckinFubba but he's got one of them annoying jobs that you have to work at nearly everyday.

Thanks for the response and sharing your story too!

I rode my old '96 S1 to work today. A cool morning here in Atlanter for being summer. Its been just about 1 year since I retired the bike and replaced it with an R1. My car was broken and my R1 is now gone (after my son crashed it) so the Buell was my only choice. With so many of the parts now obsolete I am a little reluctant to use it and expose it to the perils of collision, parking lot taps and sun roasting.

After a bit of adjustment to the low revving engine, I got on the freeway and enjoyed my ride to work. These are fantastic bikes with superb handling. Accleration is not stellar but at speeds below 90 the excel like no other.

RT:

Very nice. The factory should have offered some "solo" versions like that.

Are you going to integrate the signals into the body and fit projector beams?

I like the idea of integrating the signals. I can procrastinate on that one for at least another year! I haven't even finished blocking out the primer yet.
