When I got Uly, like everybody else had an issue w/ muffler rust. For 1st few months tried spraying w/ WD 40 after every ride which had someplace between zero & no effect. Then tried brushing on cheap, Dollar Store vegetable oil on w/ a cheap, Dollar Store brush. - Actually worked OK. - It dried hard & held the rust at bay for a couple of weeks. - The disadvantage was that the ride smelled like popcorn & the dog licked the muffler. This spring was cleaning out the garage & found a can of stove polish. Applied the polish w/ a combination of; a cheap, Dollar Store, brass brush (Are we sensing a trend here?), hard, denim rags & hunks of old clothes line, rubbing really hard to work the polish into all the pits. - Just took the chin fairing off & the muffler is still a nice gray/blue w/ minimal rust. Not the perfect answer, but a good enough one & pretty cheap. - Will be brushing on the vegetable oil for winter storage. |

Let's just hope your dog doesn't lick the muffler while the bike is in storage, his tongue might freeze to it! |

Any bike maker that fits a steel muffler, in the position that Buell has, is either cheap, loony or both. HD could have offered a stainless upgrade, on new bike, or aftermarket with a little thought. That has been the problem with HD and Buell. No thought at all. |

My '98 Buell S3T has a stainless steel muffler. I think they went to steel in '99 along with fuel injection. That SS muffler is one ugly unit but it's quiet and gives pretty good power. |

My muffler is got some pretty good rust on it, when it falls off that's when I'll get one that doesn't rust! I think the rust gives it a little bit of character of the adventure bike |

You used to be able to buy a race muffler from HD for our bike way back when. But they discontinued that item a few yrs. ago. I think it was stainless steel to. Oh, to find one of those laying around.... be worth a pretty penny to me(hint hint). |

I slathered on my used oil. Put a couple coats on. If it's rusting, I can't see it. |

I just rattle can spray paint in place so that I don't have to worry about replacement costs on those mega hose clamps that surround the muffler. I'm not sure that Hi-temp paint is necessary. Many months ago I sprayed the muffler with Krylon Brilliant Silver Metallic paint and it never peeled or flaked off. It was just something that I grabbed off a shelf in my garage. Maybe Nebraska just doesn't get hot enough. |

EG_97, The hottest place on earth I've found is late summer in 'Omerha'! The only place I've found it to be hotter? Wichita, KS. That fact alone should make your Krylon test hands down the de facto standard for muffler paint. |

I did the POR15 paint which is non-high temp, but it appeared to burn off in the hot areas. FWIW; it helped, but did NOT solve the rust problem. Mine began rusting through the POR15 in about a month. It hasn't gotten anywhere near as bad as before, but it's still not great either. |
