My ECM is due to be delivered tomorrow. I have significant surging issues with my '08 XT model. I'll be posting my results before this time tomorrow... |

"* RPM goes to 1,500 when first started." Interesting - mine did that when I first install the Erik Buell Racing ECM but doesn't now. It would barely tick over when I started it after getting back from Colorado. It has to learn how to run with actual oxygen again! Enjoy Dennis! |

Put it on about an hour ago. On my short ride to fuel up, it is quite noticeably better. Before, loafing around in my neighborhood was a 4th-gear-at-most situation. Now, it will contentedly chuff along at 2,000 rpm in 5th. Much better fueling overall -- I no longer feel like I'm riding a bike with a poorly calibrated carb! The testing continues tomorrow with my 30-mile commute, but so far I am happy with it. |

I installed my EB race ECM a while back, and still noticed some pretty significant surging between 2000 and 3000 rpm. My bike is an 09 with a K&N filter and Drummer SS exhaust. Last night I added Kevin's DB killer, and the bike actually seems more responsive and quicker in the upper RPM range. Now I'm wondering if maybe putting the stock filter back in won't improve the surging issue. I think, at least for me, the morale of this story is these newer bikes could potentially have heads designed and tuned to achieve maximum power using more restrictive exhaust and intake systems. Not just the Buells, but bikes in general. I know my 4 valve Guzzi bikes behave that way. You can't get huge power gains from opening up the intake and exhaust like you used to. At least not without some major work on the heads. I'll keep experimenting until the surging is gone. And if I can't figure out the remedy, I'll send a note to those fine folks I bought the ECM from and see if they have any ideas. |

I have a -06 Uly leftover and have been thinking about getting this ECM also, but since my bike is stock and the warranty still applies for at least another year i donīt dare messing with it to much... However, is there any gain to order this ECM even if the bike is stock? Should i at least put on a K&N air filter + the ECM, or is it best to wait for the warranty to expire and do the whole thing with new exhaust, K&N and the ECM?! Opinions are most welcome! |

Mine is stock and I just ordered one. I researched the posts and those that have the race ecm on a stock bike report significant improvement in rideability. |

I fitted a Erik Buell Racing ECM about 200 miles ago to my stage 1 tune 08 Uly. Surged to 2K on start up then settled and first test ride & noticed immediately that it was smoother and no popping - or very little. Seems quicker. Still got a hesitation between 3-4K. Asked Erik Buell Racing & they say nothing they can do as that range is difficult to remotely get right - need their tunable module... ho hum ......... see how it goes. I can mess with the cans & see if that makes a difference. Still better than standard. Pleased but theres still room for improvement. |

I just ordered one for my 09, stock air and muffler. One...performance and two...my bike is an orphan and an extra ECM is a good idea. Price is right. Euly |

Woe is me! I just got in my new race ECM, and I can't get the old one out. The front bolt on the ECM just spins and spins. I guess I didn't glue the nut in well enough after the comfort kit upgrade. I REALLY don't want to disassemble the seat rails and all again. Sigh. Grumble. I wonder it it'll just lay in there, somewhere, without actually removing the old ECM first. Well, I'll poke at it a little, probably tomorrow evening after work. |

So does it help even with stock everything? I'll upgrade my air filter (I don't know why I haven't yet) if it shows a marked improvement. I had a Special OPS exhaust on there, and I loved the sound. Unfortunately, I leave for work about 0530, and I hate to wake the neighbors every day with my loud exhaust, so I put the stock pipe back on. |

Seanp - yes, the Erik Buell Racing ecm works perfectly with a completely stock bike. My 08XT is completely original and I bought the ecm for it. I can tell you from experience that it works and it works beautifully. If you buy one you'll think you have a new bike. Bob |

I've been thinking lately about a smaller DP bike for trails in the mountains but after experiencing how well my Uly compensates for altitude I'm thinking twice. This morning was my first ride after getting back from Colorado and it ran rough at first with the cool dense air but smoothed out by the first light and then it rocked. I was used to the lower HP at altitude but it got my attention this morning! BTW - I have stock exhaust and K&N filter. I recommend the Erik Buell Racing ECM highly. |

In an earlier post I mentioned that the bike may be running cooler with the new ECM. I was skeptical at the time and now I can say I was wrong. After 5 hours and 180 miles (I had nowhere to go and all day to get there), the oil temperature at shutdown was 190 degrees, just like with the old ECM. However, it runs so smooth now right from idle that is really is a new bike. I don't even have to wait for it to warm up. I spaced out and started in 2nd gear from a dead stop and didn't know it until I realized I should be shifting into 2nd, but the tach and speedometer told me I was already there. The new ECM has turned my bike into a very well behaved, predictable machine that can be very sedate when need be, but still retains its hooligan lineage. And by the way, with the old ECM I would have expected around 43mpg on this run. Today it was 47.5. Had lunch at Gus's Drive-In too. |

I had time yesterday to take the Uly out for a longer run. Originally I had thought that the DB Killer in the Drummer SS made an improvement, but I was wrong. During my ride, the bike felt like it had about the same power as my 650 single. So it was back to the drawing board today. I thought today I'd start from scratch and see if I could find the issue. I started by disconnecting the battery for a few hours, then ran through the TPS reset procedure, then the 10 minute idle learning process, all with the DB Killer back out. I went for another ride and did the 3500 rpm for 20 mile routine that the Drummer instructions suggest. I'm happy to say at least the power feels like it's back to where it should be. But I'm still noticing some surging between 2-3K RPM when the bike is not under load. It doesn't seem as pronounced as when the DB Killer was in, but it's still there. Next I think I'll try running the stock filter for a bit and see if that makes any difference. I'll report back when I'm done. |

Ok...I'm back from another 30 mile spin with the stock filter and no DB killer. At this point, it feels like the bike is running better than it ever has, although there is still some surging. I'm going to leave this configuration in place for a while, and write a note to the folks at Buell Racing to see if they have an opinion on the matter. Tim - Would you be willing to try the stock filter in yours and report back the results you find? |

To those with stock bikes - GET THE ECM. I have a stock '06 with a K&N filter and a comfort kit (ducts only, since there's no reflash for pre-08's). I put one of the ECM's in back in April, and haven't regretted one single mile of it. Smooth power all over the rev band, hot weather, cold weather, fully loaded, running empty, stuck in traffic or beating the snot out of it places like WVBR or ResRide - it doesn't care, it just runs great. And, it didn't ding the fuel mileage one bit. Can you tell I highly recommend this computer? And, for those who are having the "stuck nut" problem...I changed my front bolt setup over. I put a bolt in from underneath, and locked it in place with a nut on top. I then hollowed out part of the ECM mounting wing (to make room for the nut), and presto - I have a stud sticking straight up, permanently attached, that I drop the ECM onto and nut it down to keep it tight. Of course, now that I have an ECM that I love, I'll probably never have to remove it again.... |

Ratbuell: Of course, now that I have an ECM that I love, I'll probably never have to remove it again.... And here I thought I was the only one goofy enough to say things like that out loud, where the universe could hear and write my name down in its little black book... I've been thinking about doing something like that "bolt from below" myself. Thanks for the reinforcement. |

where the universe could hear and write my name down in its little black book... Nah, because I'm using my powers (used ECM) for good, not evil. Tony (whose badweb name escapes me at the moment - Thunderstruck, I think) is using my stock ECM to try and troubleshoot an injector problem he's having on his XB12S.
