So I can't leave well enough alone... I have the 9 gearing on it's way. Long term plans include powdercoating the tail, primary and cam covers, triple clamps, headlight housing and fork lowers black. So....since the primary cover is off, I sent it up to my powdercoater. I sent the tail section to him as well. I'll be rebuilding the forks this winter, so I'll wait on the front end parts. My question is this: Am I opening a can of worms by removing the cam cover?? I COULD just paint it on the bike and call it good- not like it gets any wear and tear on it. Or I can pull it while the bike is down and send to to PC now. Your )experienced) thoughts? |

I've always wanted to do mine, but from what I've heard it is a pain in the ass.

If you mean the timing cover it's easy see this thread http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142 838/315389.html |

Not worth the effort. Paint it on the bike and call it good. |

Rocker arms loosened to relieve pressure on lifters. Then make sure you don't drag the cams out when you take the cover off.My experience is with sportsters, but I assume it is the same, even though the cover is shaped different.Of course you don't have to rotate the engine on a sporty to get to the rocker boxes. |

I have removed mine, and the wifes,as well as numerous other Buell and Sportsters NO engine rotate involved. no cam removal involved. It CAN be done. I recommend the press plate available from Drag Specialties to ease the removal. It will help to keep the cams in place and "press" the cover off. |

I did it. It sucked! Pulled a cam out with the cover. Was on a run to Minnesota from Arkansas. Can you say trailer relay? Now, this was on my '01 X1, but it's the same. Would highly recommend loosening the rockers arms, and getting that "press plate" |

Pulled mine to powder coat about a year ago. No big deal if you pay attention to details. Dfishman has it right. Follow the service manual procedure and you will be fine. |
