1998 S1w and I noticed when I filled to the bottom of the black inner splash guard/seal that when I'm rolling along that I get gasoline seeping outside the edges of the cap where it screws into the tank.

I took the screws out and pulled the cap off to find the previous owner used silicone to try and seal the black rubber seal that is already there. Weird. Obviously silicone didn't hold up and started flaking off from contact with the gas. I did pull some large chunks that fell off, from inside my tank. Hope nothing else fell in there.

I'm just wondering if this is a common problem? I would think the rubber black seal under the fuel cap would seal any gas issues.

As a try-it and see fix, I cleaned off the old silicone and used some of the Red Hi-temp that's supposed to be more resistant to gas and oil. Will see how it hold and will try to not fill up "top it off" style.
