Well I got done flushing my primary case about 10 times yesterday. (For the uninitiated, my clutch started dragging, even when I pulled the lever in. I drained the nasty stuff that had been in there a couple yrs., but still had the problem) With each refill/test ride, I'd find metal flakes on the magnet. So I'm faced with, either pull the cover off myself, buy some special tools, and hope it's something simple like needing new plates or bearings. I have two dealers I could take it to, St. Paul HD or Wild Prairie HD, they both say this is a 2 hr. job for them, about $200, then parts, etc, would be on top of that. But then I'd have to buy these parts myself. I'm thinkin that's not so expensive considering I've never done a clutch before. I think I'm going to take it down to Wild Prairie HD this week.
Anyone see a flaw in my logic? Go ahead, give me straight dope.

Well, as an inveterate DIY'er, I'd say buy the tools and do it yourself. That way you learn something and still get it fixed. Of course, that depends on many factors, including timing.

IIRC, the only special tool you'll need is the spring compressor (one style is shown below) and the primary locking tool (bar at bottom of photo below).

I think I got the spring compressor from ironmachine.com and the locking bar from American Sport Bike, although Al should have both tools.

Don't regret either way you choose. I've been fed up with wrenching for a while; can't believe I'm advising somebody else to do their own wrenching

Well it sounds like you did your due diligence. Also sounds a lot like my advice of flushing it multiple times, hope that didn't discourage you much.

I would have to agree with The DR. though, if you don't mind wrenching it yourself, the tools are a good investment. you will save yourself some money, and be more confident in the bike after your done.

Greg, buy the tools so I can use them later!

You can easily fashion your own clutch spring compressor.
I dug up a clutch thread from my X1:

I'm pretty sure that the clutches are the same between the XB and X1.

Uly_dude,

Did you adjust the clutch (not just the cable free play, but under the cover)as was suggested by Hughlysses in your earlier post?

The XB clutch is same as Sportster, if that means anything. Or at least the same compressor is required.

P.S. My '06 Uly clutch was making a "rubbing" noise which turned out to be the needle bearing. Not the same problem as yours, however.

od_cleaver, I did adjust the clutch every which way possible according to the manual. Even pulled the ramp out and checked that all out. The fact I'm getting lots of metal flakes/dust on the magnet after each fluid change tells me there's something else amiss in there now. I'm afraid the bad sludge was in there just too damn long. Wish I had caught it earlier.
I appreciate everyone's encouraging words to do it myself, however, the fact I need to take the bike in and replace the front tire(picked up a nail and its worn out) is going to tip the scale towards taking it into the dealer. The fact it's primo riding weather here now, and I would get SOME guarantees on the work if there's more problems are on my mind to. Famous last words I know!
Believe me, I don't want some unknown mech wrenching on my stuff, I've always done my own work, but sooner or later I'm going to have to establish a relationship with a service shop. I guess it's going to be sooner.......

Have Chris @ wild Prairie do the clutch, he'll do it right. Order a front tire from Dennis Kirk, http://www.denniskirk.com/jsp/tpl/tire/product.jsp?skuId=543119&store=&catId=&productId=p543119&leafCatId=&mmyId=
It will be here tomorrow and a place nearby will mount/balance for $30.

I'm going to have them mount that tire you gave me Ron. How soon you forget. And I thank you.

They won't mount a tire that they didn't sell (some insurance B.S.!) and certainly not a used tire.
