The 2008 service manual states that the oil level for a XB12X (with forks fully compressed, no springs) is 4.49"(114mm)from the top of the outer tube.

According to this post http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=142838&post=741654#POST741654 the 2007 should be 172mm from the top. Are the 07' to 08' forks different? Is my service manual wrong? When I cracked open my forks they measured more like the 172mm.

Well, I assume that since I am still using the 43mm forks with 07 springs and 08 triple clamps, that the 2007 level is what I should be using in my 06 Uly.

3 different years 3 different measurements and now you have to go and add 07' springs and 08' clamps on your 06' Uly
I think you would want to follow the advice from the post linked above.

That's exactly what I am using (the level specified for the 07 springs).

Just wanted to add some information to this thread for the 2008 owners. This weekend when I did my fork oil change I only measured 1.125pints of old oil coming out of the forks. This amount of oil measured in at 165-170mm from the top. According to the 2008 service manual the oil level should be 114mm from the top. So since the service manual is never wrong I opted to fill the tubes to 114mm from the top. After I was finished I went out for a ride. My first impression is that there is a slight front end difference. My bike used to feel a lot more like a pogo stick on the front end, I hit the brakes bike dives I let off the brakes bike returns. Now its as if the entire bike "sinks" and doesn't return as abruptly. Its tough to describe. Can't wait for some warmer days and this rain to stop so I can really give it a test.
