Wood, I'm sure you'd pass me too. One of my great riding joys is wandering, aimless and lost, on the big GSA, sometimes 30-40 mph, late at night on forgoten roads, just chatting with my passenger on a warm summer night.

Facts a fact - the 1200 GS is the best bike in the world - once you've invested 23+K$!

I don't know about "best" but it's a hell of a "all a rounder". I paid $19k for my '09 GSA with all the options except traction control. The only thing I've added is a pair of inexpensive ROX bar risers to get a better reach to the bars when riding standing.

I am tempted to get GPS, but I got the bike to get lost on.

Re: bike vs bike...

I've said this before, so bear with me. Mrs. Greg has taught me many things, but this was one of the best (originally intended for food, but I substituted bike ) :

"No bike is good or bad; it's whether YOU like it or not..."

I demoed a 1200gs last spring. I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't fit me well. The $18k out the door didn't fit me well either. I shudder to think how much parts and labor cost on those things. I know they are the most popular bike in the world, and there must be something wrong with me for not liking it at all, but I feel pretty good riding an American bike made in WI.

Rubberdown, I have put 8k miles on my R1200GS since June and I have to agree. For the the riding that I do the BMW is excellent. It certainly isn't the hooligan the Uly was, but I was after something different.

Yesterday, I returned from a 5600 mile trip out west. We covered 19 states and nearly 500 miles of dirt roads. The GS performed flawlessly with stock tires. I will be mounting proper knobbies for the winter though.

Sure, there were times when I would have liked to have the Uly under me; but more often than not I appreciate the properly cooled cylinders, wind protection and ABS. Riding across SW Kansas in 104 degree heat is no place for a Ulysses!

The Uly is, IN MY OPINION a wonderful motorcycle with attributes an owner can easily take pride in. Exclusivity, grin factor, aural experience make a fun ride. See you on the road...NUTS

I agree 100%. As to the empty BMW dealers, I sure see a lot of them on the road. If their riders are happy that is what counts.

And all this time I thought the Buell Ulysses was named after Ulysses, Kansas - the jewel of SW Kansas.

Just when you think you've got things all figured out...
