Finally found a venue to work on the Uly. As described here, I had an intermittent electrical issue that Rays and a few others believed to be faulty contacts in the ignition switch. As an aside, since this was only a nuisance when switching the ignition "on" and I was trying to find someplace to work on the bike, I'd been living with this situation and riding the bike. That nuisance became a safety hazard a few weeks ago when riding on the FDR Highway here in NYC and the bike shutdown for about 10 seconds and then came back to life. I know it was the same issue because I looked down and caught the dash completely dark. It then reilluminated (with needle test swings and all) when the the bike came back to life. Anyway, I got it all disassembled yesterday and was expecting to see egregious evidence of a fault inside the switch...either black burn marks or corroded contacts. I didn't see anything of the sort. But I applied a liberal coating of dielectric grease to the contacts and reassembled the switch. I plugged it back in and cycled it about 20 times. Each time it worked flawlessly. I still have everything apart and I'm debating whether I should replace the switch now or just go with the existing repair. The other issue was a clicking sound that I was getting where turning the bars lock-to-lock or when the front suspension was compressed under braking load. There was a distinct click when the forks compressed and a similar click as the forks unloaded. The diagnosis is too long to type-out but it appears to be an issue with either the steering head bearing or the yoke itself. We retorqued the upper stem nut and the problem didn't improve. We then loosened it quite a bit (and the upper pinch bolt), flexed the front suspension and retorqued everything and it's about 95% better. But once again, I'm debating whether to just bite the bullet and order new steering head bearings while it's all apart. It's a little frustrating that I'm paying out of pocket for these parts because the bike is under warranty but I have A LOT of custom wiring under the flyscreen (two HID ballasts, LED turn signal electronic modules, PIAA 510 wiring and associated relays, etc) and it would have been a nightmare if I'd brought it in for service. I found a set of steering head bearings and an ignition switch in stock at New Roc Harley so I'm going to replace both while I've got it all apart. Tipsy |

New Roc actually had something in stock? Wow. It took them a while last time I was there to find the oil filter, I was surprised they even had that, they didn't have the clutch window gasket. If they weren't 10 minutes from my job I would never stop in. |

Yep. I called Bergen, NYC, Nassau and Liberty. New Roc was the only one who had both parts in stock. It was my first time there. Easy to get to from the UES and they were very friendly. Tipsy |

The new steering head bearings should take care of the clicking. I had exactly the same issue. Tried several times to adjust the sound out with no luck. Once replaced all was right with the world again. On a side note, the old bearings looked like new. They were just clickey little suckers. |
