What's the typical component to go out on our charging systems? Stator maybe? On the way home for lunch today my bike quit charging the battery. I almost didn't make it home! I know this because my radar detector has a volt meter and it read zero output from the alternator on the trip home and the charge dummy light was on. I didn't have much time to diagnose on my lunch hour, but I did note that battery connections are clean and tight, and I didn't find any loose wires anywhere. This issue in hindsight was a gradual onset as I've had to put the bike on the battery tender several times in the past couple of weeks to avoid the starter solenoid from chattering when cranking. I do have the shop manual for my bike, but didn't get a chance to dig into it very far before I had to jump in the truck and head back to work. I know there's a lot of experience on this board, so any advice you guys could give me in addition to what I find in the manual would be appreciated. Thanks. |

There is a great home shop XB electrical diagnostic some where here on BadWeB. Hopefully someone will post the link, but you can always use the "search" tab. Mine was a worn stator wire, under the front belt guard near the connectors. Good luck. |

Search on here for the 77 connector issue, its well documented. Long story short, under the front sprocket cover is a 2 pin connector that tends to melt due to arcing from a bad connection. The fix is to replace the connector with a revised one. I would start with checking that connector, if it looks fine then move onto the next step. |

This should be a good start... http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/327 77/442480.html#POST1400571 I would take a good look at the #77 connector while doing your diagnostics. Mine was burned, but I missed the burning first time I took it apart. Everything was working again, but I took a second look at the #77 and sure enough, it was cooking itself. |

Thanks for your time guys. I really appreciate your willingness to get a guy pointed in the right direction. I put the bike on my battery tender jr. today about 11:30 and it took 12 hours to get solid green light/full charge. I didn't have my multimeter with me when I put the charger on, so I would expect the battery was slap dead. I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up replacing the battery as part of my repair. At any rate, the weekend is almost upon us, so I guess you know what I'll be doing Saturday morning. As for the #77 connector, I wouldn't be surprised. Stuff happens, so no biggie. I've been through about all the other issues we've all had in common (kickstand, headlights, primary compensator nut torque, etc). I don't know why I wouldn't get to fix this one too. She's been a solid machine over the past four years. She just needs a little lovin' and attention from time to time. What "girl" doesn't? Take care. |
