We just got back from a Two up ride through the Canadian Rockies and Interior. 1750 miles (2850 K). I began to have difficulty finding neutral after riding hard in the twisties. Also, it shifts quite hard when hot. Is this common or do I need an adjustment? It shifts just fine when cold, but what fun is that? | ||

Check your Primary Chain adjustment, if it's too loose neutral is very hard to find and shifts get clunkier. While your down there you may as well adjust the clutch also.... | ||

Too tight will cause a problem too. Since the chain gets tighter as the engine gets hot (the hot adjustment spec is a smaller span than the cold adjustment spec) that would seem to be your problem. | ||

When I bought my '06 a few months ago, it had just been serviced. Shifting was stiffer and neutral much harder to find than I thought was acceptable by a good margin. I readjusted the clutch from 1/4 turn out to a 1/2 turn out and then readjusted the cable free play. Much better now for sure----'bout like an old air cooled Beemer. These things will never be butter-smooth. | ||

Hughlysses, What's funny is that when mine was loose it would find neutral fine before the bike was hot, but was very difficult (took me over a minute one time, by then I was hot!)after it warmed up. I tightened the chain to the tighter end of the spec cold, rode until hot and it finds neutral easily now (just did this on Sunday). I also checked the chain with it hot to be sure there was some slack in it. | ||

Dave, 1/2 a turn works better for me too. At 1/4 the clutch re-engaged too near the end of its travel even with extra free-play added at the lever. | ||

Rwven- weird. In his case, it doesn't make sense that the chain would get tighter with added miles and riding, so maybe his is loose after all. Like Dave said though, easiest thing is to check clutch adjustment first. If that doesn't cure it, check primary. | ||

Zrjoe, I had the same issue with my '08 Uly around 6000 miles. The stealership ended up replacing everything in the primary, including the primary cover. You should bring it in and have it checked out before anything fails... | ||

Do you clutch with two fingers or four? If your clutch cable is out of adjustment and you're pulling with two fingers, you may not be pulling the lever far enough to fully disengage the clutch. Try pulling the lever all the way to the grip, and see if neutral is immediately easier to find. | ||

I found that my clutch free play as adjusted from the dealer was a bit too loose and the clutch was not fully dis-engeged when I pulled in the lever to shift or find neutral making it really difficult. I tightened the clutch cable free play a couple turns and all is good. | ||

Sanchez, I clutch two when riding, but when I was looking for neutral I was using four. I am pretty sure it is a primary issue. I have to get my 16,000K (10,000 mile) check anyways. So instead of me doing the adjustment I will let the dealer. I am curious, do the clutch pressure plates expand in the heat? That might explain the problem. |
