My "cops are smart" comment was just a joke. I know quite a few cops and most of them are fairly intelligent. In fact my best friend is at the police academy right now.

On the other hand I do believe that cops sometimes pull people over because they have nothing better to do and I think that is a very dumb practice. Go do something worth while

>>>>UMMM... COPS ARE DUMB

That, irrespective of the topic or subject, is an unkind thing to say.

The problem is when I read something like that I, in a matter of three words, need all I need to know about what follows and simply click to the next thread.

It's a headlight, not world peace.

I confess to a bit of amazement at the threshold of import in some folks' world.

Hey, aren't all cops dumb because they don't memorize the operations manual of every make and model of vehicle (car, motorcycle, truck, RV, trike, etc) that has ever been made.

I consider 1 headlight on a motorcylce to be common knowledge. I didn't realize that it was too much too expect that LEO's know and understand the laws they are paid to enforce.

Thats why they are cops not doctors or lawyers.

Doctors and lawyers don't have it down, that's why they call it a practice.

I consider Planck's Constant and The Avogadro constant to be common knowledge as well.

The salient difference is that I do not call folks who do not know them "stupid".

I'm old.

The years have taught me . . . a guy who can't recall his own birthday or address, but can recite equations and math all day. . . that all folks have varying strengths and weaknesses.

I just graduated with some of the sharpest Ph.D's in the world yesterday (the gal from the College of Surgeons who spoke before I did had an 11 minute introduction with her credentials) and I've learned that even the smartest don't know it all.

Like I say . . . I guess I've just gotten old.

"I didn't realize that it was too much too expect that LEO's know and understand the laws they are paid to enforce."

Let's put that in perspective - you expect a law enforcement officer to know and memorize all aspects of the following codes by State AND County:
Motor Vehicle Code
Criminal Code
Civil Code

Wow - welcome back to reality Tp... or should we be paying LEO's Lawyer salaries? Heck, if the law was so easy to know and understand then why are we willing to pay Lawyers all that money??? Of course come election time you take the time to read EVERY line of every law that is being proposed when you go to vote on it to?

The Police can not find you guilty of breaking any law - only a Judge can do that. Police can give you a citation that you MAY have broken a law. It is still up to the COURT to find you guilty...

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with a police officer trying to assist a motorist with what THEIR understanding of what the law is. If YOU don't agree with what the officer did, then all you simply need to do is go to court!

Traffic cops should know traffic laws.

No, I don't know every law that pertains to me, but it's not my job to know them either.

The officer wasn't trying to assist anyone. She wanted to write me a ticket. And if she would have, all I would have had to do was SIMPLY, take a day off work, pay for parking downtown, sit in court for hours until they called my name, in Cleveland I still may have had to pay the fine...NO THANKS.

Jeez, my mom know motorcycles need 1 headlight. 99% of LEO's know this. The 1 LEO that I mentioned didn't...now she does.

So you were just doing your duty as a citizen by informing those who aren't familiar with the law...she just so happened to be a law enforcer herself. That's great...

I am an Intensive Care Unit Nurse, we deal with the sickest, barely clinging to life people. Sometimes someone comes in(or gets medivaced in) with a complications from a disease none of us (including the doctors) have seen. Does that make us dumb? What we do is stabilize the patient and research said disease and sometimes call a specialist. After that we all know about the treatment, symptoms, and expected outcomes of said disease. Its called learning. The cop who thinks you have a headlight out, now knows that Buells have seperate low and high beams. Really not a big deal, he learned, nobody is stupid. Except for those who generalize groups of people.
P.S. I know Plancks consant and the Avogadro constant. I like to learn things.Peace!!

Tpoppa,
You didn't get cited.
You only lost a minute or two.
You educated the officer about your Buell.

I would have thought it to be fun.

Why did it make you so upset?

It cost you nothing.

I agree completely, your processes are built around diagnosis and treatment. I don't see how that pertains to this discussion.

I'm hoping that I get stopped about the headlight being out.
It will be fun to switch to the high beam.

As a former "wheel" officer I often stopped people about lighting problems on their vehicles to inform them.
Most people don't know they have a bulb out.
I never wrote a citation for it.

Listen all you panties in a bunch group You know who are Just because I said cops are dumb dont throw that all cops are dumb in there also I never said anything about firemen, military or anything else so....

That, irrespective of the topic or subject, is an unkind thing to say.

I never said I was to kind.

I have had to ask for the cops help many times in my life most the time because I am doing THERE job for them.I have had nothing but bad/lousy cops.I have only known 4 that where worth a $hit so this is my experience not everybodys.

Let me tell you the best story I ever had with a officer.

I was walking my dog when 3 guys walked towards me talking trash saying they where going to take my money.Well when the head tuffguy got close to me and reached behind his back I pulled my glock G23C and stuck it to his head. The other 2 ran the one with my gun at his head started crying dropped a BB GUN which is what he was reaching for.I kicked it away not knowing it was fake at the time.A passer by called 911 for me.It took them 20 minutes to get there knowing I am holding a guy at gun point. When they got there they did a great job.My only problem was if you can be at every corner pulling people over in the blink of a eye.Why then did it take you 20 minutes when someones about to get a few new holes in there head.

Its police like that which give me my opinion and the reason I will always have a concealed weapons permit.

Richardbiker sorry for getting your post so off topic.I do however think its funny they pulled you over for that reason and dont even know there own laws for which they are supposed to enforce.

It is fishing, and we do it a lot. it is not illegal for us to do it, we use the laws to enable us. but you know what? most of the time we do find someone who is a criminal or wanted. Innocent do become caught in the action accidentally.

Fastxb12r... Its comments like yours that give us bikers a bad name and reason to be messed with. Your probly young and cocky.

The other comment. its not my job to know the laws.......... Some what true. but if you dont know the law, how do ya know what you can and can not do legally? not knowing the law does not excuse you from it.

Tpoppa,
My point was that we in the medical field do not know everything there is to know about medicine. Just like police officers cannot know every little law on the books. Like the medical field, they learn through experience. Sorry if my point wasn't clear.

I had that happen once - talked to the cop for awhile, showed him the low beam and high beam thing - told him that's how it worked. The spent the next 30 minutes talking about the bike. Nothing came of it-other than he bought a white TT for his own use, to this day I see this guy when off duty riding around on it.

So okay.

Hoo boy, some people have issues.

I'm still getting a kick about being waved over by a cop because he wanted to know all about my bike.

That's cool, and yes, I've had half a dozen cops hold me at gunpoint. Scary but sort of an honest mistake. I'd still call them first.

"the point is, that they usually pay for their actions..."
As you well know if your profile is correct, most people who kill/maim motorcyclists in Florida DON'T pay for their actions
"with no enforcement you would be dead meat.."
When I have been threatened by morons in cages, there have never been cops around, but I have always had my 2 best friends with me, Smith and Wesson. They aren't ever afraid, and are right there when you need them most. Has kept me from being "dead meat" so far, and I trust them completely.

Yeah and you can be a typical bad cop pulling people over without just cause.

In Your Own Words....

" It is fishing, and we do it a lot. Innocent do become caught in the action accidentally. "

It should say we BEND the laws to get away with breaking your rights.Often innocent people get harassed by us bending laws as its no accident we pulled you over.

If anyone is the idiot its you stating that you illegally pull people over.I wish I had more info that way I could report you and what you just posted Richard A Meharg of San Diego California .Im not trying to be cool im just being honest sorry if you dont get that alot since your usually used to people kissing your @$$ because your a cop.
Its people like you that daily bend the rules to your liking without any regard to taking away others rights.
