Finally got them on and may do a couple of refinements to the hanging angle. Didn't fall off on the shake-down ride this afternoon.

Is this your set up or Caribou?if yours, can you post pics of the mounting method?

Thanks
Ishai

This is my set up. Caribou system won't fit because the boxes are too small. I'll get some pix up later today and it ended up being almost too simple (forest through the trees thing).

Materials list:

2 - composite decking stair rail balusters 1.25" x 1.5" x 32" approx long.

4 - 3/8" or 1/4" spike nuts with 1 1/2" bolts and 4 large nylon washers for inside support.

4 - pieces of aluminum about 3/4" wide, 3" long and strong enough not to bend easily.
Silicone sealant

Black primer paint (optional)

Router with rabbet bit to cut 5/8" rabbets.
Saw to cut ballusters
Drill press (or drill) with 1/4" drill bit

More to follow.

Some construction pix:

I used a vertical mounting set up with the lower part rabbeted over the inside of the rack and the top rabbeted on the opposite side to serve as a backer for the top mounting bar. The distance between the rabbets is tight to the inside of the mounting rack.

Inside of case:

I used nuts and bolts for the top parts because I was missing a couple of spike nuts.

Looks secure enough to me. Good job!

I see the pannier part, how is it fastened to the rack?

I have the originals and have always regretted not getting top loaders.

Do tell!

The bottom rabbet goes over the bottom bar and then the vertical mounts & case are pushed up tight to the top bar. Spin the top aluminum piece upright & tighten. You could go with the Touratech or Happy Trails top latch systems if you want to spend the $$$. This whole set up cost me a little less than $150.00 including the cases. I really didn't like the Journey's and took a beating selling them off. You can mount about anything to the stock rack, so if I decide to tour the world, I'll stick on a big-assed set of aluminum boxes.
I like these for in town and use the Ortlieb Dry Bags for travel.

Nicely done. I like it when we humans use our brains and not just our checkbooks.

My checkbook is more empty than my brain these days.

Itileman,

What tail bag are you using?

It's a Cargo Converti Tri Bag. Don't think they were ever sold in the US and are not being sold anywhere as far as I know. Got it used off the Advrider site. Great bag, expands to double the height, can sit upright on the tail like a T-bag and has a zip on magnetic bottom if you have a metal gas tank and want to use it as a tank bag.
There are also bungee cords hidden underneath if you want to mount it that way instead of using the velcro and using the tail.

Itileman - Whats the volumetric capacity & how well to they seal out the water? I really like the looks, and generally prefer top loaders. Nice job on the creative mounting. j

Wonder if one could dismantle the retractable handle on the 1440's ? Like the larger capacity. I'd leave the wheels on...might help in a slow speed tip over.

The handles and wheels on the 1440 are easily removable. I went with the 1430's because I wanted a smaller pannier style rig for in town use.
Here's a link to Pelican - they come in other colors, too: http://www.pelican-case.com/1430.html?gclid=CIH-3c 6QkZoCFRo-awodMk4oLQ
Volume internally is about 916 cu in. Which translates into a 6 pack of beer in bottles, a loaf of bread standing vertically and a medium size bag of chips uncrushed. They are water tight and will float with about 50# inside.

Agreed. However, in my case, I didn't want a permanent swap out of the side cases. Because I already owned the Buell cases, it made more sense for me to go with the HB Gobis. In fact, I've already gone back to the original cases for some upcoming stuff.

That's why I kept the mounting rack. With it, I can do about anything I want. Just found some mongo ammo cans and may add them to my travel luggage inventory. Total cost installed will be about $75.00 tops.
